Bus Driver-10 Month -Aides to the Physically Handicapped REPORTS TO: Assistant Director of Transportation/Operations Supervisor ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVE: This position is accountable for picking up and driving of handicapped children to and from special education classes and events. This position is also accountable and responsible for observing and adhering to the safety rules and requirements of the physical care of these children by following the specific directions received from supervisors consistent with the rules and regulations of the Worcester Public Schools.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: (to be included along with other responsibilities)
1. Responsible for transporting children who are ambulatory or non-ambulatory by school bus provided by the Worcester Public Schools to and from special education classes and events
2. Responsible for applying safety rules in the transportation and care of handicapped students.
3. Responsible for performing safety checks on vehicles in the beginning and end of each day.
4. Responsible for providing all necessary assistance to the school bus attendant (lift and carry) to these children according to their conditions, prosthetic devices and their specific needs.
5. Responsible, within the limits of in-service training, for adjusting the devices according to the particular positions of the children when being carried, seated or standing.
6. Responsible for supervising handicapped children during transportation periods.
7. Responsible for keeping the principal aware of any changes in schedules and attitudes of the children.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The school bus monitor performs work involving the supervision and care of children with special needs. Employees in this classification provide student and bus driver assistance as needed during daily school transportation routes. Work includes ensuring that all bus activities support the safety, security and welfare of all persons. Performs all essential functions and related work as directed. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensure the safe loading and unloading of students to and from destinations, to include operation of specialized equipment for attending to students with special needs, i.e., wheel chair lifts and secures tie downs, toddler/infant seats and seat belts.
Greets and assists each student as they enter and exit the bus.
Surveys exterior perimeter of vehicle as students enter and exit to ensure students have cleared the bus safety zone.
Monitors daily school bus activities to ensure proper student conduct at all times, and adherence to appropriate disciplinary controls.
