Anticipate problems such as traffic, weather, road conditions, and schedule changes and make necessary adjustments to ensure student safety and reduce delays. 4. Perform pre and post trip inspections according to specifications to ensure bus can be operated safely and notify shop of issues or needed repairs. Keep assigned bus clean and maintain appropriate level of fuel. 5. Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical problems, and complete required corresponding reports. Student Management 6. Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations. Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street. 7. Maintain discipline and use effective behavior management tools for student discipline problems. Immediately report problems to transportation utilizing the Student Conduct/Safety Report. Ensure all reports are accurate and received in a timely manner. Safety 8. Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses. 9. Operate equipment according to established safety procedures. Make sure that all safety equipment is used correctly i.e. seat belts, harnesses, and help students use safety devices when needed. 10. Ensure emergency equipment such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and reflectors are in good condition and proper working order. 11. Follow emergency procedures including evacuation of students as needed and administering first aid, if necessary. 12. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor. Report any hazardous conditions along scheduled route. 13.     Supporting District Operations/Bus Drivers Additional Information: Show/Hide Bus Driver in Training - Transportation Reports to: Coordinator II - Safety & Training - Transportation Hourly Rate: $15 FSLA Status: Non-Exempt Position Purpose A Driver in Training will be trained by Transportation staff to obtain a commercial driver's license with (P) passenger and (S) school bus endorsement. This is a Part-Time Hourly position not to exceed 90 days. Upon successful completion of necessary classroom and behind-the-wheel training requirements for the position, the Driver in Training will transition to a School Bus Driver role. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS * Attends all assigned training, safety meetings, and in-service meetings. * Attends all classroom preparation for written exams. * Performs behind-the-wheel preparation for road tests. * Participate in training to learn to maintain bus in a safe operating condition through prescribed daily vehicle inspections. * Participate in training to learn to maintain order and discipline among students on bus following District policies and procedures regarding disciplining of students and contact with school officials and parents. * Participate in training to learn to fuel and clean exterior and interior of buses including picking up debris, sweeping and mopping floor, wiping upholstery, and cleaning headlights. * Participate in training to learn to utilize two-way radio for bus to bus and bus to base communication. * Participate in training to learn to perform first aid according to established guidelines and procedures. * Rides along with Bus Drivers on regular and special events to learn routes and practical application of student management techniques. Safety * Observes all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses. * Ensures proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, and reflector. * Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. * Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor. Reports any hazardous conditions along scheduled route. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities * Knowledge of safety protocols, including District rules and regulations, and Texas rules of the road. * Knowledge of traffic laws, regulations, and road signs. * Knowledge of how to conduct pre/post trip inspections. * Skill in time management and problem solving. * Skill in reading a map. * Skill in interpersonal relationships, including using tact, patience, and courtesy. * Ability to read signs, route descriptions, and maps, calculate mileage and route times, and complete route descriptions, incident reports, and mileage reports. * Ability to use manual dexterity sufficient to operate the bus, conduct pre-trip inspections, and clean the bus. * Ability to distinguish color differences of traffic lights and transportation signage. * Ability to have sharp vision and hearing within professionally determined normal ranges with correction, if needed. * Ability to complete required bus driver safety training. * Ability to manage student behavior. * Ability to operate a bus, read bus routes, adjust routes, and complete assigned bus routes as required. * Ability to use computer/software, including email, to complete work assignments. * Ability to organize and coordinate work. * Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written forms. * Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth. * Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work. Travel Requirements * Travels to school district buildings, to vehicle service stations, field trip locations, and other destinations and professional meetings, as required. Physical & Mental Demands, Work Hazards * Tools/Equipment Used: Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a school bus, conduct pre/post trip inspections, and clean the bus; two-way radio; safety equipment including but not limited to, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher. * Posture: Prolonged sitting; moderate standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting. * Motion: Frequent sitting; frequent walking; frequent use of hands for fine manipulation, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching, including keyboarding and use of mouse, and operation of video display terminal; frequent driving. * Lifting: Must exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally (such as lifting students in wheelchairs), and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. * Environment: Indoors 25%, in controlled environment, 75% outdoors, in uncontrolled environment; frequent exposure to weather elements, extreme heat/cold, noise, hazardous chemicals, vehicle fumes, dust, and vibration to hand and arm from steering wheel; works around moving vehicles; regularly works irregular hours, and occasionally works prolonged hours. * Vision: Performs tasks requiring sharp vision (close and distance), color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus; with or without corrective lenses. * Hearing: Performs tasks requiring sharp hearing, to distinguish sounds within the vehicle and hear sounds in the external environment despite distractions; with or without corrective lenses. * Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position. * Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions. Minimum Required Qualifications * Education: Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency preferred. * Certification/License: * Clear and valid Texas Driver's License required; * Clear and valid Texas CDL Class B driver's license with (P) passenger and (S) school bus endorsement or ability to obtain license within 90 days after employment; * Insurable by the District's insurance carrier required. * Experience: Must have an acceptable driving record; see Insurability Requirements below. * Additional Requirements: * Must be able to pass annual physical. * Must be able to complete a 20-hour course while in training, and a recurring 8-hour course to maintain the CDL license. INSURABILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL DRIVERS * Must be at least 21 years old. * NO positive drug or alcohol tests including pre-employment, random, post-accident or reasonable suspicion. * Driving and accident record: Valid Texas Department of Public Safety Driver Record Check Type 3A-Certified list of all crashes and violations **************************************************** * NO more than 2 violations during previous 36 months including: * moving traffic violations (including no more than 1 preventable accident); * failure to provide proof of valid driver's license or proof of insurance; * equipment violations. * NO Driving Under the Influence (DUI) for drug or alcohol. * NO leaving scene of an accident (bodily injury or physical damage). * NO vehicular assault, manslaughter, or homicide. * NO operating a vehicle with suspended or revoked driver's license. * NO reckless driving, speed contests, drag racing, or highway racing. * NO use of a vehicle in commission of a felony. * NO operating a vehicle without owner's permission (unauthorized use or grand theft). * NO permitting an unlicensed person to drive. * NO speeding more than 20 mph over the posted speed limit. * NO history of a conviction in a commercial or personal motor vehicle. * Additional restrictions may apply if directed by FWISD's Fleet Insurance Carrier.
