A minor traffic offense is defined as an offense where the maximum punishment allowable by law is 60 days incarceration or less. The Gaston County Police Department was created by Legislative Act on July 1, 1957 and began operation with a chief, a secretary and 23 sworn officers. At that time the Department was primarily responsible for providing police service to the unincorporated areas of the county. Since that time, however, additional duties and responsibilities have been given to the Gaston County Police. Today, the Department employs 153 sworn officers who provide police services to a community of approximately 90,000 residents and spanning an area of over 270 square miles that along with the unincorporated areas of Gaston County also includes providing police services to the incorporated towns of High Shoals and Spencer Mountain. The duties listed below are not all of the duties that may be assigned but are those that are considered as essential for an employee to perform. * Performs various duties assigned including uniformed patrol of unincorporated areas of the County, traffic enforcement, accident investigations, preliminary investigations of crime scenes, undercover investigation and provides drug and crime prevention programs to individuals and public groups. * Places individuals under arrest and testifies in court proceedings. * Initiates and completes records of actions taken and enters data in manual and/or computerized police record management systems. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree is required. A course of study in Criminal Justice or other field of study related to police work is desired. Full-time Description Job Purpose: The Town of Landis, N.C., seeks qualified applicants for the position of full-time Police Officer. The selected candidate will report directly to his/her immediate supervisor within the police department. Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties in protecting property and providing a safe learning and work environment for students, staff, and citizens. Officer serves as a link between law enforcement and the school, school administration, teachers, parents, and students. Essential Duties (Any one position may not include all of the tasks listed, nor do the examples necessarily include all of the tasks performed.) Enforces Federal, State, and Local criminal laws and ordinances, and assists school officials with the enforcement of Board of Education Policies and Administrative Regulations regarding student conduct; Prevents juvenile delinquency through close contact with students and school personnel; Establishes and maintains a close partnership with school administrators and other security personnel; Acts as a liaison between school personnel and students; Informs students of their rights and responsibilities as lawful citizens; Works with guidance counselors and other student support staff to assist and provide services to students involved in situations where referrals to service agencies are necessary; Investigates criminal activity committed on or adjacent to school property; Assists administration and faculty in formulating criminal justice programs; Formulates crime prevention education programs to reduce the opportunity for crimes against persons or property in the schools; Participates in Parent Teacher Student Administration (PTSA) meetings as requested; Participates in and provides security for campus activities, student organizations, and athletic events when invited and feasible; Provides traffic control during the arrival and departure of students; Develops safety plans for school events; Performs other duties as required. Dependability Patience Education and Experience Graduation from an accredited high school including completion of additional courses and seminar in various phases of police work. Completion of all basic requirements of North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and training Standards Commission for a certified police officer. Equipment Operated Personal computer, printer, copy machine, fax machine, scanner, patrol vehicle, police radio communications equipment, and other assigned equipment as required. Special Requirements Possession of an appropriate valid North Carolina driver's license and possession of the Basic Law Enforcement certificate awarded by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Standards Commission.
