Inspect truck and trailer for defects to ensure safe operating condition before, during, and following trips; complete and submit daily vehicle inspection form.

Collect payment for goods delivered and for delivery charges when necessary.

Operate forklifts with lifting capacity between 3,000# and 100,000# to move freight between equipment, warehouse, and yard locations.
Load and unloads truck/trailer, securing shipments using a variety of cargo straps, ropes, lumber, etc.; this process may involve climbing up and on to the deck of a flatbed, on to a flatbed load, and/or into and out of containers and trailers as needed.
Assist in the maintenance of company property, to include sweeping of warehouse floor, equipment, and other service center facility housekeeping duties as required.
Report all safety hazards, incidents, and/or accidents involving cargo, vehicles, driver, personnel, or citizens at large.
Maintain records required for compliance with State, Federal, and corporate rules and regulations including but not limited to the following: vehicle inspections, hazardous material manifests, and permits.
Must be able to work flexible hours.

WORKLOAD

You will lead clients up the Chilkoot Trail and down the Taiya River safely and enthusiastically with an ultimate goal of satisfied passengers at the end of each trip.
Description of Guided Programs: Chilkoot Trail Hike & Float & Scenic Drive Excursions
Chilkoot Trail Hike & Float: Hike two miles of the historic Chilkoot Trail, the centerpiece of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. Enjoy the exercise, fresh air, beautiful scenery, pristine forests, and history of a bygone era as the trail takes you up and over the 350' tall Saintly Hill. Where the trail reaches the banks of the Taiya River, you will board an 18-foot inflatable raft for a three-mile scenic float (no whitewater) back down to the tidal estuary where the forest gives way to fields of beach greens and wildflowers below the granite walls of the fjord that rise steeply to the snow-capped peaks and hanging glaciers.
Additionally, all Hike & Float guides will train into the “Gear Guide” position. This is the behind-the-scenes role that ensures all rafts and gear are set up properly for guests when their hike ends. The gear position requires driving a box truck with a trailer attached.
REQUIREMENTS
Prior guiding, leadership, or tourism experience is helpful.

Mid-Season Operations

PROFESSIONALISM
All employees represent the company whether they are at the docks, on tour, or off the clock exploring the town. We live and work in a small Alaskan community, so poor/inappropriate behavior will quickly establish a bad reputation for an individual and reflect poorly on the company.
LIVING AND RENT STRUCTURE
Employee housing is located in downtown Skagway. The grocery store and other local attractions are within walking distance. Accommodations consist of shared rooms typically 2-4 beds per room, although the largest room is a 6-occupant bunkroom. Each house features shared bathrooms, a kitchen area, and living room. Employees residing in housing are expected to respect others and maintain a clean and respectable living area. Rent procedures are clearly outlined in the Employee Manual. The two downtown houses share a large yard with mountain views, providing a fantastic base for our team. Each house has a specific house manager who will be responsible for the weekly chore schedule and chore completion checkoffs. House managers will call attention to any issues within the housing unit and employees are encouraged to let their house manager know if they experience any issues.

About this role:

In this role you will:

Required Qualifications:

The Assistant Manager plays a key role in supporting the day-to-day operations of the Hike & Float program, working closely with the Skagway Rafting Manager to ensure everything runs smoothly. These include creating the daily schedule, approving timesheets, coordinating and participating in raft and gear maintenance, and handling disciplinary matters as needed.
While this is a general overview, the position encompasses a wide range of duties and requires flexibility, leadership, and strong organizational skills.
The Hike & Float Assistant Manager reports directly to the Hike & Float Manager.
REQUIREMENTS
2+ years guiding, rafting preferred.
Prior management experience is helpful.
Prior leadership and tourism experience is helpful.

Must be able to carry loads over uneven ground.

Relay the performance and progress of all guides to the Rafting Manager.

Together with the Rafting Manager, coordinate breakdown of the program at the end of the season.
Other duties as dictated by daily needs.

We offer a Hike & Float Scenic drive which is the normal four-hour tour with an added drive up the Klondike Highway into Canada afterwards. We also run a Scenic River Float tour which is just the float portion of the tour, no hiking involved. You may also be required to assist in other office duties not listed.
PROFESSIONALISM
All employees represent the company, whether at the docks, on tour, or off the clock. AMG/CG expects everyone to conduct themselves professionally and exemplify the behavior associated with our quality guide service. Given our small Alaskan community, any inappropriate behavior can quickly damage your reputation and reflect negatively on the company.

CDL Driving:
Must obtain and maintain a valid Class B CDL with Passenger and Airbrakes endorsements. To be eligible to obtain a CDL, a candidate must have a clean driving record, be over 21 years of age by March 1, 2024, and have had a driver's license for at least one year

WORKLOAD
June, July, and August are busy and the Skagway Dock Representative can expect to receive 40+ hours per week. The nice thing is that Alaska has very generous overtime laws and the Dock Representative can expect quite a jump in your paycheck size.

ADDITIONAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Employees will be called on to participate in a variety of activities associated with the climbing and adventure park sites and operation, as well as residential upkeep. Routine maintenance at the climbing and zip sites includes course and route inspections, maintenance and route cleaning, documentation of inspections, trail work, and area development. Daily operations also include vehicle cleaning and washing as well as other maintenance.
Employees may be called on to share driving responsibilities and potentially other part time office duties. Driving is an important part of the program and guides will be expected to not only be safe and abide by all local and state driving regulations, but also to be entertaining for our guests. The drive to and from the climbing/zip site is an opportunity to enhance the guest's experience by providing historical and interesting information about the town, its history, the beautiful outdoors surrounding us, and other types of trips and programs that the guests can participate in within the AMG.
Employees may also be called on to participate in Haines-based long trip programs at any time. The opportunity to gather additional experience in any of these programs is a privilege. One of the key elements of the AMG and IWLS structure is the use of staff from Skagway for programs generally operating out of Haines. The ability to be flexible with schedules and adapt to changes, sometimes with short notice, is a requirement and expectation of your employment.
TRAINING
All new employees must participate in Guide School Courses provided through the International Wilderness Leadership School (IWLS) for your chosen discipline (rock, zip, rafting, etc.). IWLS is an accredited, recognized leader in experiential education. These courses will develop your technical, decision making, and leadership skills. Successful completion of these courses will grant you IWLS certifications. These skills are transferrable and can be used with any similar employer or even for recreational purposes. For over 30 years, our clients have been participating in the same courses - often gaining college credit.
IWLS courses for Alaska Mountain Guides Rock, Zip and Hike Guides:
IWLS Rock Climbing & Rappelling Guide School, 5-6 days

MID-SEASON OPERATIONS
Early to mid-June through late-August is the height of the cruise line season. In this period staff will be required to work 40+ hours a week. The nice thing is that Alaska has very generous overtime laws and the Haines Admin Assistant can expect quite a jump in your paycheck size. During this time, the office will be a very busy environment and the Haines Admin Assistant will be expected to juggle dispatch, scheduling, guide requests, phone calls, and more all while remaining calm and organized.
LIVING SPACE AND RENT STRUCTURE
Haines housing options consist of our employee campground, we have a few campers/RVs for senior staff, and limited space for employees seeking to bring their own campervans/trailers/RVs, most 1st year staff camp in the wooded area encircling the campers/RV parking. The campground has (4) plumbed bathroom/shower units and a communal cooking area due to the presence of bears in our area we prohibit cooking/food storage outside the communal cooking space. The campground is located on the same lot as our warehouse/office making the commute to work convenient for any staff planning to come to Alaska without a vehicle. There is a laundromat located within a short walk down the street. A guide room is located on the corner of the warehouse with access to WiFi.
Additional Notes
Rent deductions are made twice a month with 50% of the months rent deducted from the 1st and 2nd paycheck.
Rent is prorated for the first month, rent for the last pay period will be deducted in full even if you vacate housing early.
Employees must vacate housing within 48hours of their final shift unless other arrangements have been approved by management.
Pets Must be approved by management, approval may be rescinded if your pet causes problems or is not friendly towards humans and other animals.
Failure to abide by rules outlined in the employee manual and housing agreement may result in immediate expulsion from employee housing.
