Job Summary
The surgical technologist is an allied health care professional who works in collaboration with the RN circulator, and the supervision and delegative authority of the surgeon, to facilitate the safe and effective care of the surgical or procedural patient.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
The individual holds an associate degree in Surgical Technology or is a graduate of an equivalent, accredited Surgical Technologist Program and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential or
Has successfully completed an accredited school of surgical technology but has not, as of the date of hire, obtained the certified technologist certification, provided that such certification shall be obtained within 12 months of the graduation date.
Has been employed as a surgical technologist in a surgical facility on July 1, 2013.
Has successfully completed a training program for surgical technology in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service (MA Senate Bill 2058, December 2012).
BLS/CPR certification required within one week of hire. AHA & ARC accepted.
Professional Development Certification preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities
Adheres to scope of practice as a Surgical Technologist
Maintains a safe operating room environment as prescribed by Hospital policy, AORN and AST Standards of Care, and regulatory requirements.
Adheres to isolation protocols established by Infection Prevention and standard precautions for blood/body fluid policies utilizing OSHA Standards.
Maintains a working understanding of, and adherence to, aseptic technique
Maintains integrity of sterile field
Ensures a safe environment for the perioperative patient and staff

Must be able to function in CSR to cover needs. Ensures proper preparation of instruments and equipment.

Demonstrates proper specimen collection, identification, and transportation techniques
Assists in the preparation and labeling of medications on the sterile field in accordance with regulatory requirements
Adheres to department procedure for the prevention of retained surgical items through the proper completion of surgical counts. Communicates results of surgical counts to surgeon
Assists in room turnover and in-between case cleaning.
Assists in maintaining adequate stock of supplies in the surgical suites, clean supply room, and sterile supply room
Demonstrates perioperative emergency preparedness (Fire, Code Blue, Malignant Hyperthermia)
Performs duties as a preceptor for new hires to surgical technologist position
Participates in unit staff meetings, in-service programs and educational programs relative to career development. Performs other work-related duties and activities as assigned or requested by his/her immediate supervisor.

Assists the Mohs surgeon by providing and controlling surgical instruments and equipment during Mohs stages. Ensures that instruments and supplies are cleaned, sterilized and available as needed. Provides hands on assisting with Mohs procedures. Assists with lab/pathology processing of Mohs specimens. In addition, the surgical assistant will assist the dermatologist providers in day-to-day dermatology patient flow.
Responsibilities
Opens sterile supplies and sets up for each procedure.
Performs medical assisting duties which may include, but are not limited to, vital signs, height and weight, and assisting during excisions and Mohs surgical procedures. Ensures that all patient care areas are clean, organized, stocked and ready for patient use.
Assists Mohs surgeon during procedure according to prescribed standards. Assists and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
Performs proper dosing and mixing of medications: Buffered Lidocaine, Kenalog, Sclerotherapy preparations, Botox- Cosmetic & Hyperhidrosis, etc.
Sets up procedure room, according to prescribed standards.
Assists Mohs surgeon throughout the procedure with instruments, and providing hands on assistance, according to prescribed standards.
Takes appropriate photographs of Mohs stages. Label and organize photographs.
Performs appropriate point of care testing, such as lab tests and specimen collection. Implements quality control standards to ensure proper functioning and accuracy of testing equipment. Provides patients with relevant instructions for specific tests and procedures.
Sterilize and package instruments.
Sterilization and aseptic technique:
Demonstrated expertise in safety principles, asepsis, sterile technique and universal precautions.
Knowledge of and ability to disinfect, clean and sterile surgical instruments, equipment and supplies.
Assist in procedure room maintenance, including case preparation, room turnover, and instrument processing.
Communicates with patients, other teammates and the general public in a courteous, helpful manner by phone and in person.
Document in the electronic medical system (EMR) as needed.
Assist with inventory and storage of equipment and supplies.
Performs medical assistant duties as required for non-Mohs patients, as part of the dermatology practice as needed.
Provided demonstrated competency and supervisory agreement is in place, performs injections of subcutaneous and intramuscular medications.
Assist with OSHA daily and monthly checks. Must have the ability to correctly maintain the OSHA log.
Complete suture inventory and check rooms for expiring inventory.
Records and maintains pathology logbook to ensure that all pathology reports have been properly documented.
Responsible for cross coverage when needed.
Must be willing and able to travel to brand or region practice locations to provide clinical coverage when needed. This includes providing coverage when clinicians are on vacation as well as sick calls and PTO coverage.

Minimum Qualifications:

Two years of experience in an outpatient surgery center, Mohs dermatology practice, or office-based surgery department preferred.
BLS certification required.

Infectious control, HIPAA, and OSHA knowledge is preferred.
