The Special Education Coordinator is passionate about supporting the students who are at-risk for academic underperformance due to emotional and/or physical challenges so that they can succeed in the school's rigorous academic program. The Special Education Coordinator holds primary responsibility for providing academic, emotional, and physical services for students who require additional support to thrive within the school's core academic program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensure that all students receive the educational services that they need to succeed;
Identify incoming students' special education needs as indicated by family questionnaire responses;
Review the results of intake assessments of new students to identify special education needs;
Schedule and providing pull-out services as needed;
Schedule, coordinate, and chair team and pre-referral meetings;
Conduct academic testing as part of the evaluation process;
Coordinate and conducting classroom observations and testing (i.e. psychological) as needed;
Ensure that all regular education teachers know and understand all classroom accommodations required by IEPs;
Deliver one-on-one, small group, and whole class instruction as appropriate;
Maintain student records regarding special education issues and preparing reports for regulatory agencies;
Ensure compliance with all City, State, and Federal special education law and regulations;
Contribute to the design of curriculum materials;
Design and administer rigorous, standards-based assessments and using assessment data to refine curriculum and instruction;
Help to create a culture of order, structure, humanity, and academic rigor in the classroom and school as a whole; and
Collaborate with other teachers, other school staff, and administrators to ensure that all our students climb the mountain to high school and college.

Bachelor's degree is required; Master's degree is preferred.

Uncommon Middle School English Language Arts (ELA) teachers are passionate about literature and building an engaging classroom culture. Our teachers develop subject mastery and have a keen sense of the socio-emotional changes middle schoolers experience. At the heart of all ELA classes is an emphasis on writing and discourse designed to give students the tools to be confident in the power of their own voice. You do not need to be certified to be hired; however, if hired you will need to pass state teacher certification tests to meet the MA state requirements.
All Commonwealth charter teachers must either have an appropriate MA educator's license or pass required the MTEL(s) including the Communications and Literacy MTEL , Subject Specific MTEL, and the MTEL SEI (Sheltered English Immersion) Endorsement within first year of employment. All core academic teachers* assigned to teach English learners are required to earn the SEI endorsement. Any teacher without a SEI endorsement has one year from date of assignment to teach ELs, to earn the MTEL SEI endorsement.

The Teaching Assistant will be responsible for supporting the Education and Career Instructors, who are primarily responsible for delivering the curriculum. The Teaching Assistant will assist in preparing materials, setting up activities, leading small-group sessions, and providing general support to students in the program. The program will take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays immediately following the end of the school day in Somerville Public Schools. Teaching Assistants will work approximately 10 hours a week. This six-month contract spans from January to June 2026, with the potential for a summer extension.
Responsibilities:
Work directly with the Education and Career Instructors to implement the curriculum. Provide support through leading small group activities, gathering materials, and assisting students with their tasks.
Build trusting relationships through regular communication with students, and offer encouragement and guidance in a supportive and welcoming environment.
Assist in administering surveys to students throughout the program to track progress in SEL, college and career readiness, and other areas of concern.
Act as chaperones during occasional field trips during program time, ensuring students travel to and from all locations safely.
Work closely with the Education and Career Instructors, who will lead the program and are responsible for ensuring the smooth implementation of the curriculum.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
A 2- or 4-year degree in social work, education, counseling, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
1-4 years of experience working with middle or high school youth, including experience working with ELL, first-generation, and low-income students. Experience working with students with IEPs is a plus.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to build rapport and trust.
Strong problem-solving skills and proven record for taking ownership of responsibilities.
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while independently managing tasks and responsibilities.
Experience working in an international and multicultural environment.

College for Social Innovation (CFSI) brings together colleges and social sector organizations to create fully-credited experiential learning opportunities that are meaningful, accessible, and life-changing. Our college students, referred to as Social Innovation Fellows, build skills and a professional network that helps to position them to become the next generation of problem solvers for humanitys tough challenges. The AoPS Academy in Lexington (Waltham), MA is hiring part-time Teaching Assistants (TAs) with strong math and language arts skills to support our campus during the academic year. As a TA you may grade assignments, host regular office hours, and run on-demand 1-1 tutoring sessions. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who want to work with motivated younger students and contribute to the AoPS Academy community.
This is a part-time VIRTUAL position for the 2025-26 Academic Year, Sunday through Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. While this is a virtual position, candidates must reside in MA.
Our TAs contribute greatly to the success of our students and are an integral part of our Academy family. This may be a great fit for you if you enjoy interacting with students, guiding them as they work through challenging math and language arts problems, and helping them feel more confident about math and language arts concepts.
Academic year TAs work well independently and support students outside of their regular AoPS class time. TAs typically work with students from various classes/levels simultaneously to assist with homework and help students understand material they missed or may need further guidance on. Job Duties:
Host weekly office hours and on-demand tutoring sessions for students.
Work with students individually or in small groups.
Provide exceptional feedback on graded assignments.
Collaborate with instructors and full-time staff on student and classroom needs.

Qualifications:
Must be 16 years old or older
Possess strong math and language arts skills with the ability to help students navigate advanced concepts
Ability to work well independently with little supervision
Can successfully support small groups of students from various classes/levels simultaneously
Experience with/interest in working with younger students strongly preferred
Exceptional written and spoken communication
Positive and encouraging attitude that helps students feel comfortable asking questions
Detail-oriented and organized
Familiarity with the AoPS curriculum is not required, but a plus
Location and Schedule:
Although this is a virtual position at our Lexington campus location, candidates must be located in Lexington or the greater area and must be able to commute to our campus as needed to pick up teaching materials, proctor tests, etc.
AoPS Academy is an afterschool program with classes in the evenings and on weekends, so candidates must be available to work during weekday after-school hours and/or on weekends. We are currently hiring someone who can work Sunday through Thursday between 6:30pm-8:30pm via Zoom.
