The Port of Virginia company history timeline

1967

1967 J. Robert "Bobby" Bray joins the Port Authority as general counsel, beginning a four-decade-long career in which, after rising to executive director, he would lead the unified port through explosive growth.

1989

1989 The Virginia Inland Port, a truck-and-rail interchange for goods shipped through Hampton Roads, opens in Front Royal, west of Washington, D.C.

1997

1997 Its success leads the Port Authority to decide not to request General Fund money to run its operations.

2011

2011 In February, a crane accident at APM leaves two new, $9 million cranes out of commission.
