Performs the following repair tasks: overhauling vital engine components, repairing and maintaining structural integrity, repairing and maintaining hydraulic systems, inspecting and repairing brake components, overhauling rear differential and rear axle bearings, troubleshooting ignition and electrical systems, repairing and recharging air conditioning systems. Performs the following maintenance on machinery: checking fluid levels, changing oil and filters, replacing tires, batteries and hoses, tuning engines, greasing equipment, pumping gasoline, and washing/cleaning equipment. Operates machinery used in fabrication of parts and designs requested by verbal instruction or detailed drawings. Operates machinery, equipment and tools associated with repairing, rebuilding, maintaining, and testing equipment, specifically: specialized welders, cutting torch, air arc torch, mechanic tools, pneumatic tools, and diagnostic instruments. Rigs and lifts heavy loads such as truck beds, boom sections from knuckle boom loaders, and large sheets of steel. Maintains equipment service records, warranty records. Prepares and/or receives forms, drawings or documents; processes and forwards. Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages and/or directs calls to appropriate personnel; responds to requests for service. Responds to service calls for vehicles disabled on the road; troubleshoots problems or arranges tow. Cleans shop areas after projects are complete. Maintains shop equipment, specifically: air compressors, gas pumps, hydraulic lifts, electrical wiring in building. Assists tire shop in repairing rims and removing stripped lug nuts and studs. Maintains grease and oil separator. Performs routine maintenance on Fuel Islands. Reviews, completes, and forwards work orders using a computer operating program. Must respond to callouts and after hour calls when on call. Must accomplish the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, in a timely manner.     PAY GRADE: Grade 14 TYPE: Full time Assistant Automotive Technician working in the Merit System perform work that involves assisting skilled automotive mechanics in installing and repairing motors and performing general maintenance tasks on automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, graders, bulldozers, mowers, motorcycles, tractors, backhoes, garbage packers, and other standard and specialized equipment. Employees in this classification also perform general custodial tasks in maintaining service area buildings. The work performed by individuals in this classification involves the execution of specific rules, regulations, or procedures. Incumbents receive continuing or individual assignments by their supervisor generally indicating work to be done, limitations, quality and quantity expected, deadlines, and priority of assignments. Assistant Automotive Technicians perform under the immediate supervision of a skilled technician, skilled mechanic, or a supervisor and are inspected for quality of workmanship in progress, upon completion and through performance evaluations. Birmingham $16.03 - $24.87 Bessemer $15.54 - $24.11 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position: * Driver's license. * Coursework, certification, or verifiable experience performing or assisting with preventative maintenance on motor vehicles such as changing fluids like oil, antifreeze, transmission, brake, hydraulic, and power steering fluid. * Coursework, certification, or verifiable experience performing or assisting with basic repairs such as testing batteries, testing alternators, replacing belts, replacing hoses, and brake repair. JOB DUTIES: Typical job duties include, but are not necessarily limited to: * Inspects equipment/rolling stock before and after completing work and reads reference materials to guide maintenance and repairs. * Performs preventive maintenance (PM) and tune-ups on rolling stock such as cars and light trucks, heavy trucks (e.g., street sweeper, bucket truck), and/or heavy equipment (e.g., bulldozer, backhoe) based on each vehicle's or equipment's PM schedule. * Assists with repairs on cars and light trucks, heavy trucks (e.g., street sweeper, bucket truck), and/or heavy equipment (e.g., bulldozer, backhoe) as needed. * Maintains building, grounds, and equipment. * Performs maintenance and assists with repairs on small air-cooled engines such as lawn mowers, weed eaters, chain saws, motorcycles, generators. * Repairs or replaces tires on equipment/rolling stock using appropriate tools and apparatus. * Goes to worksites to retrieve equipment or make repairs. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Job involves significant and concerted physical exertion required for regular prolonged periods of carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, or walking. Involves lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Work involves the ability to read small numbers and letters on meters. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed primarily in employer-owned facilities such as workshop and involves the use of electrical, gas, or air powered tools and equipment such as metal cutters, welding equipment, and pneumatic wrench. Work may be conducted in cramped work spaces requiring extended periods in contorted body positions and exposure to contaminates such as dust, gasoline, and/or caustic chemicals, and to potential mechanical and moving vehicle hazards. Work involves exposure to extreme temperatures (hot and cold), working around uneven, cluttered, and slippery surfaces, high vibration and loud noise (e.g. industrial and repair equipment).
