Pediatrix Medical Group has an exciting opportunity for a Certified Fetal Echo Sonographer to join our team at one of our Maternal Fetal Medicine clinics in Denver, CO . At Pediatrix, we are passionate about giving high‐risk expectant mothers and their babies the care they deserve.
Responsibilities
The Certified Fetal Echo Sonographer provides diagnostic ultrasound tests for patients in the Maternal Fetal Medicine setting. The Certified Fetal Echo Sonographer works independently and with other members of the healthcare team to provide comprehensive care to pregnant women.
Explains exam to patient and family prior to the commencement of the test to assure cooperation and optimum test results.
Prepares patients for ultrasound examination and performs required Fetal Echo scans.
Acquires anatomical, pathological, and/or physiological data.
Records/processes sonographic data and other pertinent observations made during the procedure.
Creates a preliminary report for physician interpretation and review/signature.
Assists physician during invasive procedures such as amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling.
Recognizes equipment malfunctions and takes appropriate corrective action.
Responsible for maintaining adequate inventory of ultrasound supplies.
Follows the accredited laboratory protocols for obtaining two‐dimensional images, color flow, Doppler, and m‐mode where applicable.
Rotates as needed to cover Sonographer absences.
Performs related and other assigned duties as directed.
Qualifications
Education:
Graduate of an accredited sonography program with a degree in ultrasonography or equivalent.
Maintain or be eligible for certification as an American Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS) in OB/GYN.
Must provide evidence of continuing education credits to fulfill accreditation requirements.
CPR certification required.
Fetal echo certification required.
Experience
Minimum six months experience as an ultrasound technician working in OB/GYN and/or MFM setting preferred.
Experience Industry: Healthcare
Skills/Abilities:
Skilled in operating ultrasound equipment.
Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

Maintenance and Qualifications:
Attend all faculty-led ultrasound-specific lectures, journal clubs and staff meetings
Attend 50% of ultrasound quality improvement and clinical journal club meetings
Attend other conferences as necessary to stay current with latest ultrasound practices
Meet CME requirements to maintain ARDMS credentials
Attend one local/regional or national ultrasound-related meeting per year (e.g., SDMS; AIUM; SRU; RSNA; etc.)
Key Responsibilities:
Primary duties include the following:
1. Review ultrasound images with sonographers upon completion of their clinical examination for appropriateness, image quality, and protocol completion
2. Review patient clinical history, including signs and symptoms, to ensure complete patient history and aid in appropriate billing of examination
3. Interfaces with clinical providers as needed to clarify appropriate imaging indications
4. Review prior relevant reports and imaging studies including prior ultrasounds, CT's, MRI's, PET's, and Nuclear Medicine studies
5. Provide scanning assistance for technically challenging and/or complicated exams. Authorize patient release or rescan patient to resolve diagnostic questions
6. Provide real-time quality assurance feedback and coordinate department-level quality-improvement initiatives. Participates in departmental QA program to provide sonographers with feedback from radiologists.
7. Synthesize sonography examination results and prepare draft report in the radiologic dictation system
8. Assist with new sonographer onboarding and trainee education
9. Oversight of new service lines and communication of protocol changes to ultrasound staff
10. Independently perform advanced techniques such as contrast-enhanced ultrasound and musculoskeletal ultrasound.
11. Facilitate clinical and translational research activities
12. Perform additional advanced sonography services as delegated by the supervising physician, consistent with education, training, and facility protocols, policies, and procedures
Secondary duties include the following:
1. Must be able to demonstrate patient-centered/patient-valued behaviors. Assume responsibility for the safety of the patient while in the ultrasound department
2. Must be proficient in general and pediatric-specific ultrasound and vascular exams. Apply independent, professional, and ethical judgment, and critical thinking to ensure that appropriate anatomical, pathological, and clinical conditions are accurately captured in the examination images
3. Ensure the sonography examination order is complete, contains relevant clinical information, and meets the standard for “medical necessity”. As necessary, acquire additional images to facilitate optimum diagnostic results for the interpreting physician
4. Must be virtually self-supervising. Must be able to perform, interpret and report ultrasound examinations
5. Adhere to applicable professional and ethical standards. Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures
6. Provide patient services consistent with the Scope of Practice and Clinical Standards for the Diagnostic Sonographer. Except as authorized by written facility policies and procedures, refer specific diagnostic, treatment or prognosis questions to the appropriate physician or healthcare professional
Equipment use and maintenance
1. Exercise responsibility to ensure that the ultrasound equipment is functioning accurately. Show ability to troubleshoot quality control procedures to confirm ultrasound equipment operates at optimal levels to ensure patient safety and high image quality
2. Conduct sonography examinations in accordance with infectious disease, sterilization, and patient safety protocols, policies, and procedures
3. Provide education and training to sonographers in the utilization of new equipment and software features, and new scanning techniques
4. Directly oversee use/performance of advanced ultrasound techniques such as contrast-enhanced ultrasound, elastography and other quantitative imaging, and musculoskeletal ultrasound.
5. Show proficiency in post-processing of 3D data for volumetric and multiplanar assessment
Documentation and reporting
1. Document any incidental findings that may impact patient safety or patient care and provide that information to the interpreting physician and/or ordering provider
2. Identify and document any limitations to the sonography examination
3. Exercise responsibility for the preparation, maintenance, and accuracy of reports, database records, and logs
4. Provide oversight of imaging quality and completeness within Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS)
Quality assessment/quality improvement
1. Oversee quality assurance, monitoring sonographer's scanning capabilities, accuracy, protocol completeness, and technique before findings are released for interpretation
2. Work with the supervising physician to ensure quality patient care
3. Function as a technical or clinical leader/expert in sonography
4. Help develop and maintain templates to use in reporting examination findings.
5. Create draft reports for review and finalization by supervising radiologist
6. Account for the creation, oversight and implementation of scanning protocols and quality control activities that positively affect patient care and outcomes, workflow, and/or cost-effective imaging
7. Provide re-scanning support to staff sonographers, when appropriate
8. Assist hospital administration in their efforts in securing and maintaining site accreditation
Healthcare team interaction
1. Act as an effective liaison between sonographers, radiology faculty, Radiology/Imaging Services administration, Radiology department administration, and clinical research office
2. Demonstrate good verbal and interpersonal skills. Positive, proactive attitude with willingness to problem solve; ability to build trust and facilitate a collaborative working relationship within a busy clinical service and among multiple sonographers and other stakeholders
3. Assist with the education and training of sonography students and radiology physicians trainees

This position will provide support to the freestanding Maternal Fetal Medicine clinic, located in Downtown Denver, Littleton, Parker, and Fort Collins.
This position reports directly to the MFM Practice Manager and indirectly to the Medical Directors and the Division Administrative Director.
This position will be scheduled Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm or 8:30 am to 5 pm with no on-call obligation.
Each MFM clinic has two sonographers onsite each day.
Each sonographer covers one room with an average of 8 patient scans per day.
Each clinic has either GE Voluson22 or GE Voluson E10s with ViewPoint reporting software that interfaces with EPIC for our EMR system.
We follow AIUM guidelines for our ultrasound protocols and each clinic is recognized as an AIUM accredited ultrasound practice.
CU MFM values a work culture in which our sonographers are well respected.
The MFM division is comprised of a dynamic team, which includes 3 dedicated Fetal Surgeons, 21 MFM physicians, 2 Physician Assistants, 1 Nurse Practitioner, 2 Genetic Counselors, 1 OB Endocrine Physician, 2 Diabetes Educators, 12 Sonographers, 1 Nurse Navigator, 8 Medical Assistants, and 4 dedicated schedulers.

There is an ample amount of partnership between our MFM physicians and the sonographers.
After each scan, the sonographer will present the case to the MFM physician and share their perspective on the patient's case.
As CU MFM is part of an academic institution, a great deal of importance is placed upon teaching and ongoing education.
CU MFM hosts a monthly Education Series for the clinical and nonclinical staff.
In this series, MFM physicians present different topics, protocols, and interesting ultrasound cases.
CU MFM also hosts a biennial fetal imaging ultrasound conference in partnership with Children's Hospital Colorado, which includes presentations from MFM physicians and MFM sonographers as well as a hands-on ultrasound training course.
