  • Fries dominate the potato scene, with a remarkable 20 states favoring them. This count does not include other popular fried potato variations like potato skins.
  • For those who prefer a non-fried option, mashed potatoes are the top choice in 7 states.
  • Southern states show a strong preference for casseroles, with 6 states opting for this hearty preparation.
  • Interestingly, no state ranked hash browns or poutine as their top choice, as some opted for soups and other less popular dishes instead. This clearly indicates that there are indeed wrong choices.
  • Vermont stands out with a whopping 6 distinct potato dishes, including latkes, poutine, potato skins, sweet potato fries, home fries, and potato salad. Check in on your Vermont friends; they’re likely enjoying their potato bounty.
  • Texas is unique for favoring Fried Mashed Potato Balls as their top choice.

How We Determined This

To uncover the favorite potato dishes across the U.S., we utilized Google Trends. We analyzed 40 different potato dishes, encompassing the most popular and cherished options. This comprehensive list included fried favorites, classic potato dishes from family gatherings, and a variety of tasty sides. Chances are, your favorite potato dish is included!
