Using the most recent data from the Census American Community Survey, we focused on Massachusetts metros with a civilian workforce exceeding 5,000.

While unemployment rates provide valuable insight into local job markets, they only tell part of the story. To give a more nuanced analysis, we evaluated the top job markets in Massachusetts using a range of metrics.

Each metro area was ranked from 1 to 54 based on four key categories:

  • Unemployment Rate
  • Change in Unemployment Rate
  • Household Income Growth
  • Current Average Household Income

A lower score in each category indicates a stronger job market. For example, Melrose had the lowest unemployment rate at 2.77%, securing its top position in that category. The final scores were averaged to generate our overall rankings, where a lower total indicates a better job market.
