Discover the 10 Least Active Places in Kentucky for 2026
In any workplace, encountering an unproductive colleague can be frustrating. Whether it’s someone who consistently delegates their tasks or takes undue credit for others’ hard work, the impact on team morale can be significant.
If you reside in one of these Kentucky towns, you might find a reflection of that unproductive ethos in your community.
Our intention isn’t to be harsh; rather, we recognize that a culture of low productivity can seep into the workplace, making collaboration challenging. To identify the towns in Kentucky where residents might be more inclined to take it easy, we analyzed the latest available data.

How We Identified the Least Active Places in Kentucky
At Zippia, we rely on data to tackle challenging questions. We pride ourselves on our analytical skills and dedication to providing insights.
For this analysis, we turned to the latest American Community Survey data. The Census Bureau recently released updated information, allowing us to conduct this unique analysis.
After reviewing numerous criteria, we selected the following metrics to determine the least active areas in Kentucky:
- Lowest average hours worked
- Shortest commute times
- Fewest workers per household (calculated as the labor force divided by the number of households)
- Highest unemployment rates
- Lowest percentage of adults with a college degree
Our rationale was straightforward: a community where higher education is less common, work hours are minimal, and household workforces are limited likely reflects lower productivity levels.
We gathered data for 78 Kentucky towns with populations over 5,000, ranking each town from 1 to 78 based on our criteria, with 1 indicating the least active.
We then averaged the rankings to create a “laziness index,” ultimately identifying Middlesborough as the town with the lowest index score.
