The Christmas Gift Each State Will Give More Than Any Other This Year

Find a Job You Really Want In

We write about jobs daily, but most of us go to work to pay the bills– and buy some of the finer things in life, such as gifts for friends and families.

Every holiday season has hot gifts that everyone wants.

This year, demand for the PS5 is sky-high, toss in Amazon gift cards and you probably have some of the most popular gifts of the season.

However, judging from Google searches, some states are searching for different gifts than other.

To find out where those hard-earned dollars are going, we used Google trends data to find out what gift each state is searching for more than any other state.

The results? Gift cards galore, and lot of pricey tech.

Most Interesting Findings

  • 18 states have a gift card as their most uniquely sought after gift, while another 11 want some fancy tech.
  • The PS5 is one of the most sough after gifts of 2020- but folks in Delaware want it the most.
  • Wyoming is willing to settle for the PS4. How generous.
  • Forget gifts, Illinois (Grocery gift cards) and New Mexico (gas card) want some bills paid.
  • Amazon gift cards- another of the most searched for gifts this year- is most sought after in Maine.
  • Silent Night in Texas, once those noise cancelling headphones go on anyways.
  • “Yo quiero Taco Bell” – Oregon probably.
  • Babies in Connecticut better get ready for all those baby ugg boots (they probably didn’t ask for).

How We Determined This

Using Google Trends, we determined the potential Christmas gift each state searched for more than any other states. For example, Minnesota searched for Chipotle gift cards more than any other state.

Google searches are a great way to learn more about what gifts people are pondering, especially this year with online shopping being so popular. We searched hundreds of terms ranging from gift cards to restaurants and stores, popular tech, kitchen goods, stocking stuffers, and more.

We look at searches ranging from November 11th, 2020 to December 7th, 2020, giving us a good chunk of the holiday shopping season to examine.

Sorry procrastinators, your online shopping didn’t make the cut- but, who are we kidding, you’ll probably just buy a last minute, panic gift card anyways.

It’s Official, Everyone Wants Gift Cards… Sort Of

Judging from Google search volume, expensive tech aside, most people seem pretty set on exchanging gift cards.

After all, what better way to say Merry Christmas than $25 to Olive Garden?

While Gift Cards can feel slightly more, personalized than cash (since you can spend cash anywhere- not just on unlimited breadsticks), you might want to consider if it’s what your gift recipient really wants.

After all, gift cards are sort of like money- but with more steps and way less useful.

If you’re a boss or someone in charge of company-wide gifts, you should definitely forego gift cards in exchange for the traditional Christmas bonus— which is cold hard cash and what your employees really want.

Don’t believe me? Just try and pay your light bill with Starbucks gift cards. Then try and not cry in your latte.
