1839

In 1839, three years after the founding of South Australia, John Harvey migrated to the colony from Scotland.

1847

In 1847, he purchased land along the Little Para River for the purposes of establishing a township.

1848

In 1848, Harvey began selling allotments for the township of Salisbury, named after Salisbury, England near his wife’s hometown.

1851

However, Salisbury grew little in the early 19th century and had a population of less than 9,500 in 1851.

1860

Salisbury Museum was founded in 1860.

1882

Then in 1882 Old Sarum was finally extinguished when it became a public park.

1892

In 1892 a public swimming pool opened.

1908

The first cinema in Salisbury opened in 1908.

1940

Little changed until 1940 when the Federal Government built a munitions factory at Penfield.

1945

More council houses were built in Salisbury after 1945.

1961

He became enamoured with science fiction and fantasy at a young age and published his first story, “The Hades Business,” in a school magazine in 1961.

1968

Old George Mall opened in 1968.

1975

A new library opened in Salisbury in 1975.

1976

A new swimming pool opened in 1976.

1982

The Redcoats In The Wardrobe Museum opened in 1982.

1986

The Maltings Shopping Centre opened in 1986.

The prehistoric stone monument Stonehenge (designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986) is about 8 miles (13 km) to the northwest.

2007

In 2007 Pratchett was diagnosed with posterior cortical atrophy, a variant of early-onset Alzheimer disease.

2009

He subsequently became an outspoken advocate for Alzheimer research and awareness, donating $1 million to the cause and appearing in a 2009 BBC documentary about his life with the disease.

2010

Although his illness affected his ability to read and write, Pratchett continued to regularly publish books, and in 2010 he became an adjunct professor of English at the University of Dublin.

2012

Dodger (2012) relays the adventures of a young man in Victorian London, where he encounters a Dickensian array of characters—among them Charles Dickens himself.

2017

In 2017, as per Pratchett’s wishes, his uncompleted works were destroyed—his computer hard drive, which contained as many as 10 unfinished novels, was smashed by a steamroller and then run through a stone crusher.
