Primary Duties

Apprises lab management of issues, problems, concerns, as well as suggestions for lab functions. Management is apprised of issues, problems, concerns and suggestions.
Operates necessary computer system(s) to perform job functions.

Formal education - Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Medical Technology or related science with State of California licensure in medical technology or categorical area.
Proficiency in laboratory procedures. Computer experience preferred. Communication and organizational skills. Ability to perform accurately and consistently under high stress.
Excellent physical stamina, which includes the ability to walk or stand from 6 to 10 hours a day, do repetitive bending/reaching, climbing of stairs, and sitting. Ability to carry 10 pounds constantly and to lift up to 25 pounds on occasion. Ability to do constant repetitive motion, using hands, fingers, wrists to perform testing, and other related functions. Ability to work at computer terminals for varying periods of the day which can range from one to three minutes or as long as several hours. Emotional stamina to handle the unexpected and stressful situations that may arise while working with sick or injured patients. Must be able to hear and speak the English language well enough to communicate instructions by spoken conversation and phone. The Hospital Specimen Preparation Technician (HSPT) is responsible for daily preparation of patient specimens from hospital clients. The HSPT must demonstrate a mastery of all functions of specimen preparation for submission to multiple Quest Diagnostics facilities, as well as Rapid Response Laboratories (RRL). The HSPT works with minimal direction. Additionally, since many changes do occur from day to day, great flexibility on the part of the HSPT is required. The majority of HSPT work is on the day shift, but flexibility is required for weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime based on client requirements.
Responsibilities
Responsible for preparation of patient specimens for hospital clients and pick up by couriers.
Responsible for positive daily client interactions representing Quest Diagnostics to the customer (face-to-face and/or telephone).
Prepares and arranges all stat testing needs, researches pending results, alerts Hospital IT to communication failures, accepts and troubleshoots incoming calls to the Hospital Lab from Quest Diagnostics facilities.
Demonstrates excellent proficiency in test ordering policies, procedures, specimen requirements for test ordering, sample preparation,Care 360 and compliance/legal requirements.
Troubleshoots and problem solves client issues related to area of responsibility.
Communicates and collaborates effectively with the Hospital Lab Manager, as well as the Quest Diagnostics sales team and other functions in the organization.
Relays client concerns to Quest Diagnostics supervisor and sales. Participates in sales/operations review of account.

Incumbents are assigned to work or float in appropriate areas. Responsibilities are expanded to include participation in activities relating to quality assurance, quality control, proficiency testing, policy and procedure review, in-service training and staff development.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Possession of a Bachelor's Degree with successful completion of an accredited Clinical Laboratory training program as evidenced by licensure from the State of California.
Experience
Minimum one year recent experience in an approved hospital laboratory.
Licensure/Certification
American Society of Clinical Pathology certification recommended.
Possession of a valid license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in the State of California is required.
KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Hospital established policies and procedures for quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
Clinical Laboratory instruments and equipment.
Clinical Laboratory terminology and Laboratory routines.
The appropriate uses of procedures and tests.
Exposure to infections and contagious diseases.
Exposure to the risk of blood borne diseases.
Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.
Federal, State, and local laws and regulations governing clinical laboratory practices.
Ability to:
Perform the full range of laboratory duties and responsibilities in an acute care setting.
Plan and organize diagnostic testing procedures on patient specimens.
Maintain concise and complete records and test reports as required.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, patients, and fellow employees, and with all internal and external customers.
Handle absentee replacement on short notice.
Work occasional irregular hours.
Manage emergency or crisis situations; requires judgement/action which could result in undesirable patient outcomes.
Secure the cooperation of employees to work effectively together.
Keep abreast of developments in area of laboratory testing.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

Maintains, demonstrates and is assessed on the knowledge and skills necessary to provide for physical, psychosocial and cultural needs appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her assigned unit.
