1963

Founded in the spare bedroom of William Cook’s Indiana apartment in 1963, Cook Medical is the world’s largest, privately-owned medical device manufacturer.

In 1963, William Cook and wife Gayle invested $1,500 to buy a blowtorch and some plastic tubing and started making medical catheters in a spare bedroom of their Bloomington, Indiana, apartment.

1964

In 1964, Dotter first described what is known as angioplasty.

1978

Dotter would be nominated in 1978 for the Nobel Prize for pioneering interventional radiology, a specialty that uses minimally invasive procedures to gather images of practically every organ system in the body.

1980

Cook told an interviewer in 1980 he never expected to make much more than $1,000 a month selling his products when he started.

1982

In November 1982, Bill Cook and Neal Fearnot first discussed the possibility of starting a company to serve as a research and development arm of the Cook Medical companies.

1983

Incorporation papers were signed to form MED Institute, Incorporated (MED) on May 26, 1983, with Neal Fearnot as president.

1988

Carl joined Cook Group in 1988, the company founded by his father, Bill Cook.

1995

Cook Biotech’s first two employees, Michael Hiles and Umesh Patel, in 1995, with the first piece of SIS produced at Cook Biotech

2002

In 2002, Cook MyoSite, Incorporated was formed to guide the Cook Group organization into the expanding world of cellular technologies.

2011

In 2011, the FDA issued a safety communication stating that serious complications from the use of TVM were not rare and reclassified the mesh as a “high-risk” medical device.

2012

First approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2012, Cook’s Zenith aortic stent grafts have revolutionized procedures to repair the aorta.

2014

July 2014 696 CloverSnare 4-Loop Vascular Retrieval Snare devices used to retrieve or manipulate foreign objects such as balloons, catheters or filters in blood vessels.

During this same period, the company was undergoing what its leaders called “the Transformation” – a retooling of quality control and manufacturing procedures following a warning letter from the FDA in September 2014 following an inspection of the company’s Bloomington, Indiana, facility.

2015

To further the mission of Cook Medical providing medical products to patients, MED Institute was divided into two separate companies in 2015.

In 2015, the Indianapolis Business Journal estimated the cost of Cook’s expenses for dealing with recalls, warning letters and lawsuits at $20 million a year – roughly two percent of its annual revenue.

2017

As of May 2017, more than 1,900 lawsuits were still pending against Cook over its IVC filters in a MDL before an Indiana federal court.
