Positions are for full time salaried employment, but the expectation is that providers may put in over 40 hours per week performing clinical, program, and recordkeeping functions. As a Federally Qualified Health Center, patient access is a primary consideration influencing individual work schedules and productivity/ patient encounter expectations. Hygienists are expected to function as part of the dental team that enhances the expeditious flow of patients through their appointment while maximizing the workflow efficiency of the dentist. Clinics are open Monday - Saturday, are staffed by multiple dentists, and assignments may include working at multiple locations during the work day. The Center is also a dental residency site and some supervision and mentoring can be expected. Allocation of time between patient care, outreach programs, and dental residency supervision is determined by the Dental Director. An aspect of the outreach program is working at the dental trailer at Kamaile school and the dental mobile van that visits local schools and sites to treat patients. Outreach events occur outside of work hours and the schedule of the hygienist may be modified to attend these events.

The Prosthodontist Dental Assistant works under a dentist's supervision to prepare equipment that will be used in dentistry procedures, to ready patients for these procedures, and to help the dentist during these procedures by passing instruments, holding the suction catheter in place, and generally anticipating the dentist's needs.

Responsibilities: Work under the direct supervision of the Prosthodontist Perform a variety of patient care, office, and laboratory duties, including but not limited to providing chair-side assistance while dentists examine and treat patients.
Ensure patients are as comfortable as possible in the dental chair, prepare them for treatment, and obtain their dental records.
Hand instruments and materials to dentists and keep patients' mouths dry and clear by using suction or other devices.
Sterilize and disinfect instruments and equipment, prepare trays of instruments for dental procedures, and instruct patients on postoperative and general oral health care.
Prepare materials for impressions and restorations, take dental x rays, and process x-ray film as directed by a dentist.

Compensation: This is an hourly position, paid bi-weekly.
Schedule: Dental Assistant services shall be provided Monday through Friday, between the hours of 0630 and 1600. Dental Assistant General Duties:
Contractor personnel shall perform a full range of duties consistent with their labor category, education, training, experience, clinical privileges (as applicable), and assigned position. General duties that apply to all personnel or across certain labor categories are given below.
Maintain a level of productivity comparable with that of other individuals performing similar services.
Participate in peer review and performance improvement activities.
Practice aseptic techniques as necessary. Comply with infection control guidelines to include the proper handling, storage, and disposal of infectious wastes, and the use of universal precautions to prevent the spread of infection.
Function with an awareness and application of safety procedures.

Operate and manipulate automated systems such as CHCS, CDS/CDA, DENTRIX, MHS Genesis and Clinical Information System (CIS), participate in clinical staff Performance Improvement (PI) and Risk Management (RM) functions, as prescribed by the Commander. Maintain DOD email account as directed.
The HCW shall be responsive to all email and voicemail communications.
Exercise appropriate clinical delegation of tasks and duties in the clinical direction and coordination of health care team members, patient care, and clinic activities.
Maintain documentation of all treatment provided in accordance with clinic directives and prepare such records and reports as may be required. All records and reports must be legible. Abbreviations must be only those listed in local instructions.
Dental Assistant Core Duties:
Responsible for performing a full range of dental assisting procedures in support of Dental Officer examinations and delivery of treatment under the "four handed dentistry" format within the personnel and equipment capabilities and limitations of the Dental Treatment Facility
The HCW shall aid in the provision of mandated dental surveillance and preventive services and assist in ensuring the quality and timeliness of treatment records and reports required to document procedures performed and care provided.
The HCW shall also refer patients who present with a complaint to staff dentists for evaluation and continuation of care and attend multidisciplinary treatment team meetings on behalf of the dental officers.
The HCW shall:
Maintain patient records in accordance with Joint Commission and DTF/MTF requirements.
Assist during administration of anesthesia.
Assist in placement and removal of sutures.
Dispose of contaminated waste in accordance with the standard procedures of the DTF/MTF.
Maintain operatory to meet the clinic's cleanliness and infection control standards. These clinical duties do not include mopping, sweeping or taking trash to an industrial dumpster.
This is a personal services contract for clinical services; however, as time permits, the HCW may be assigned other duties consistent with the normal duties of a dental assistant as directed by the Commanding Officer. These duties include, but are not limited to, working at the appointments desk, performing Central Sterile Supply functions, and participating in command quality improvement and assurance meetings, etc.
As a member of a professional team, the HCW shall contribute in a positive manner to team building and morale.
Under government supervision and the clinical direction of a dentist, all dental assistants may be allowed to participate in Expanded Functions training program and certification in accordance with all current and relevant BUMED and DHA instructions and local directives at the Commanding Officer's discretion.

Basic Requirement for Dental Assistant: Radiology Certification: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (1) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field. The following meet these requirements:
(1) Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others.
(2) Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence, as determined by OPM or the employing agency.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which includes assist the dentist during dental procedures, maintain supplies for dental treatment room or assisting with x-ray equipment in a dental office. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education: Successful completion of a full four-year course of study in a dental assistant or dental hygiene program that included at least 24 semester hours of courses in radiation physics; radiation biology; radiation health, safety, and protection; X-ray films and radiographic film quality, radiographic techniques; darkroom and processing techniques; and film mounting.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.

Essential Functions:
Coordinates patient testing, instruction and record keeping with Pre-surgery Orientation team.
Obtains urine specimens and insures delivery.
Assists with answering phones, filing, and faxing. Enters patient information from computer systems.
Maintains and cleans supplies needed for laboratory procedures and electrocardiogram (ECG.)
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Hospital Corpsmen (HM) assist health care professionals in providing medical care to Navy personnel and their families.
