RK&K is currently seeking a Designer to join our Energy and Corrosion team in Richmond, VA. On our Energy and Corrosion team, you will support a variety of natural gas utility projects utilizing AutoCAD, MicroStation, and ArcGIS. Some travel is required.
Essential Functions
Develop technically accurate and deliverable computer-generated construction drawings based on direction and engineering sketches; preparation of contract drawings and color renderings; maintain adherence to company and client CADD standards and procedures
Support project research, agency requirements, drawing preparation, organizing CADD files, drafts, design plans and details
Use AutoCAD and related software to develop layouts, drawings and designs that meet engineering specifications
Provide support through a variety of tasks including proposal drawings, red marks, and sketches
Interact with engineers and Project Managers to quickly and accurately update/correct drawings during design process
Ability to read and understand construction drawings
Review engineering drawings, analyze design and retrieve information to complete drawing, layout or design
Use detail drawing or engineering specifications to dimension, scale, or line locate
Possess thorough understanding and efficiency with company drafting standards
Support surveying data processing and assist in the development of plats and designs using CADD technology
Performs field GPS survey work to describe location of present and proposed facilities, obstructions and required geographic features. Interprets designs, coordinates and/or approves minor field changes.
Required Education, Skills and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent
Two (2) to four (4) years of job-related work experience, including at least two (2) year's experience in the design and drafting of utilities; or the equivalent combination of formal education/training and experience
Knowledge of mathematics and experience in the application of engineering and construction standards, surveying, and pipeline construction necessary to determine design requirements. Familiarity with environmental permitting, rights-of-way requirements, and safety standards and practices
Experience developing construction drawings and material requirements for systems associated with natural gas or piping infrastructure installation, removal or modification
Ability to work independently under the direction of Engineers and Project Managers
Ability to effectively plan, manage, and coordinate multiple work assignments
Ability to make accurate field surveys, produce legible, accurate and technically acceptable construction related documents, and develop and produce job drawings using AutoCAD
Possesses good verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
Valid driver's license
Proficiency with AutoCAD
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Teams, Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook)

Possess thorough knowledge of MicroStation, ArcGIS and ESRI software
Experience with GPS surveying equipment
Continuing education or college-level training in the use of CADD or equivalent knowledge and or experience

The junior designer is expected to apply standard design techniques under the clear direction of the lead designer or engineer. Tasks will have clear and specified objectives, but will require the investigation of a few variables to provide a design that will meet stated objectives. The incumbent is also required to meet design milestones agreed to with the lead designer or engineer. Documentation of each phase of the design project is required for internal use and transmittal to the customer. Technical competence is necessary for the incumbent to apply current industry accepted technology to meet the project objectives. The junior designer will be required to review the details of each completed task to ensure that his/her work is error free. The positions require working with a variety of industries, clients, and technical issues. The junior designer is required to track budgets for assigned tasks on each project to prevent the project from exceeding its budget. The junior designer will sometimes meet with customers to discuss design related questions. The junior designer must be able to work with others. Overtime is sometimes required on a project.
