SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The scope of work to be performed by the Electronic Technician includes, but is not limited to, testing, inspecting, installing, maintenance and repair of all signal equipment and may be required to perform digging, trenching, and painting duties while working independently. Observes safe work performance standards and operations in completion of daily tasks and provide prompt reporting in cases of accidents, injuries, and illnesses. Attends safety briefings when assigned by Foreman, observes safety compliance, maintains qualifications (GCOR) and coordinates with other departments. Monitors and ensures that all necessary tools and materials for completion of work is provided. Participates in the planning and directing of testing and maintenance of signal equipment such as relays, batteries, switch machines, signal fixtures, cable, and drag equipment detectors. This position works within the guidelines of the System Safety Program by being alert o physical hazards which affect operations; including the modification of recognition or cessation of operations when conditions exist or could develop which that may conflict with a safe operating environment for Amtrak or others.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Conduct testing for switch machinery, batteries for plant grounds, relays and cable for specifications, track signals, circuits for route locking, crossing track, locking points and balanced air, air compressors and record findings in accordance with AMT 27.
* Inspects test signal apparatus and systems and records the findings including the results from above in accordance with AMT 27.
* Maintains and repairs the above in accordance with AMT 23 and the special instructions governing the construction of Signals and interlocking.
* Assists Signalman in performance of assigned duties and conducts his/her own equipment tests and records results.
* Works with the Foreman to maintain all small tools and equipment conducting daily inventories to ensure good working order.
* Responds to signal failures, answers trouble calls for signal failures and reports to the Foreman
* Assist in marking out where cables are located; installation of new movement ties; switch inspections, surfacing and to provide generators for power outage.
* Perform carpentry, plumbing, and electrical tasks as needed including pipefitting and low voltage 220 voltage electrical work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
* Applicants will be required to qualify for the position by passing the electronic technician examination for communications prepared by System Communications Engineering Department.
* The technician must be familiar with the division reporting structure, possess knowledge of data and voice circuit electronics, and have general knowledge of electronics.
* Must be capable of learning, understanding, and maintaining Amtrak's cable plant.
* Must be a minimum of 18 years of age and a high school graduate.
* Applicants must have a valid driver's license on the date of hire.
* Must be able to read and understand job information written in English.
* Applicants must be able to perform basic mathematical computations including fractions and decimals.
* Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats and reflective vests, outside work with exposure to all weather conditions. This includes wind, extreme cold and heat on or in close proximity to railroad tracks, highways, and waterways in noisy environments due to machinery and heavy work vehicles in the area.
* Occasionally work in confined spaces.
* Climbs and performs duties on ladders, scaffolds, bucket trucks, scissor lifts at heights above 30 feet carrying 25 lb. tool bag in wet conditions and constricted areas.
* 40-hour workweeks that may include variable shifts with overtime and may have to work on rest days, holidays, and weekends.
* Works as extra member of gang as required by work assignments.
* Works on bridges (heights), in tunnels, signal towers, at 35"feet and above, and on high speed tracks.
* Must have acute hearing, with the ability to distinguish and separate sounds around heavy machinery, noisy equipment and tools, voices near and at a distance.
* Demonstrate agility and coordination while lifting, stooping, carrying heavy loads.
* Must be able and willing to understand and apply safety rules, practice safe work habits, identify safety risks, and avoid potentially risky behaviors and situations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Electronic/electrical background or education preferred.
* Communications, electrical and/or electronic experience preferred.
* Previous railroad experience in communications preferred.

Assists in evaluating, recommends, and plans system-wide signal improvement initiatives. * Programming, data entry, making physical connections and confirming proper operation of traffic signal controllers and malfunction monitoring units.
* Assists in the planning, plan preparation, reconstruction, and construction of new signalized intersections. Assists with attempts to optimize existing systems, and assists the Traffic & Safety Engineer or designee in the preparation for future traffic patterns.
* Assists the Traffic & Safety Engineer or designee in the review of traffic signal models and traffic signal timing permits performed by engineering consultants.
* Reads blueprints, electrical schematics and charts and diagrams to determine signal repair or installation procedures, and assists in the development of specifications for traffic signal controllers, two-way radio equipment and traffic analysis tools.
* Performs diagnostic bench work and the repair of traffic signals and related components such as load switches, loop detectors, etc.
* Performs routine inspections of traffic signal equipment and schedules and/or performs preventive maintenance. Troubleshoots electrical and signal equipment to determine causes of malfunctions, and repairs/replaces parts as needed.
* Using field notes, topographic survey data, and standard specifications, draws proposed plans for road and signal improvements as directed. Evaluates existing and proposed signal features and calculates quantities for cost analyses. Surveys, plans, prepares drawings and specifications from which Road Department signal projects can be constructed.
* Conducts a variety of engineering field studies pertaining to traffic volumes, pavement markings, vehicle turnings movements, etc. Maintains RoadSoft inventory databases for asset management analyses.
* Leads inspection activities for signal construction contract work and annual Road Department system improvement programs to ensure that work meets standard specification, plan and proposal requirements. Performs and verifies construction project staking and ensures proper placement of work zone signing and traffic control devices. Coordinates inspection functions with the contractor's operations. Advises the contractor concerning the suitability of materials and methods used.
* Measures, computes and keeps records of materials used and work performed in the field. Computes and compiles final quantities of construction work performed by contractors, and prepares various reports. Calculates pay estimates for road, signal, and Road Department system improvement programs. Advises the contractor on material acceptance requirements and ensures compilation of proper project documentation.
* Assists the Director of Engineering and/or their designee in the review of traffic impact studies with regard to traffic signal operations and impacts on road users.
* Performs minor electrical maintenance work related to buildings and grounds equipment.
* Responds to MISS DIG Locate and Design Ticket requests to filed locate and/or provide as-build drawings for underground traffic signal facilities.
* Assists the designated on-call person with traffic signal issues and/or responding to emergency traffic signal repairs outside of normal working hours.
* Responds to information requests and complaints calls from the general public. Coordinates follow-up with appropriate personnel and enters data into computer database. Answers inquires and complaints from the public and mitigates complaints regarding contraction, construction traffic control, and access problems.
* Performs office work such as filling out forms, keeps records, filing documents and reproducing documents or drawings. Tabulates measurements and field data, maintains related records, prepares support materials diagrams and prepares various written reports.
* Represents the Road Department at pre-construction meetings and other signal project related and Committee meetings. Provides information related to particular projects and performs various administrative tasks.
* Attends a variety of workshops and seminars, reads periodicals and other related materials to stay current on new developments, techniques and methods.
* Maintains inventory, project and work records (Including daily logs) and compiles maintenance and status reports
