Job Description Thompson Engineering has a full-time opportunity for a Survey Instrument Technician. The Surveyor Instrument Technician provides support to the Surveyor Party Chief in the daily responsibilities of the land surveying department. This position is responsible for collecting survey data using designated survey equipment. Ideal candidates must be willing to travel to support project needs. Duties: Operates total station, digital and automatic level, Topcon data collector, TDS software. Collect data for field level notes which is reported to the Surveyor Party Chief. Respond to pipeline emergencies and one-call tickets. Perform integrity management tasks and general upkeep of facilities and equipment. CST-Specific Responsibilities: Troubleshoot outages and communication issues on SCADA and Gas Control systems. Configure and maintain RTUs, PLCs (GE, Allen Bradley), and communication devices. Maintain and troubleshoot telecom systems: satellite, cellular, Starlink, Ethernet, and serial radios. Troubleshoot low-voltage AC/DC systems and electronic transmitters. Assist Project Managers and Engineers with new projects and acquisitions. Provide training and technical support to field technicians. Monitor and report project progress; maintain inventory and update reports. Participate in cross-training with measurement, compressor stations, and offshore facilities. Other duties as assigned. Working Conditions Primary work location is central field office with travel to field facilities, onshore and offshore. Exposure to weather extremes, confined spaces, loud noises, and potential hazards. Physical activities include standing, climbing, kneeling, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and repetitive motion. Offshore travel by boat or helicopter and occasional overnight stays required. Assigned work schedule may include 4/10s, 14/14 rotation, or other variations; overtime and on-call required. Lift up to 25 lbs. occasionally. Must be available and fit for duty for overtime, on-call and call-out work as assigned or required. Perform duties in required PPE (FRCs, steel toe boots, respirator, hard hat, arc flash gear). Position subject to DOT Pipeline drug/alcohol testing requirements. Education and Qualifications Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent. Technical schooling in electrical or related field preferred. Valid Driver's License. Strong verbal and written and communication skills in English. Minimum 5 years' experience in Electronics / Controls / PLC Programming or related field. Pipeline experience with meter proving and pigging preferred. Assigned job level (I, II or III) depends on experience. Must have experience troubleshooting RTUs, PLCs, SCADA networks, and telecom systems (FreeWave/MDS radios, cellular modems). Familiarity with UPS and battery backup systems. Working knowledge of applicable EPA, DOT, OSHA, NEC, AGA, API, and GPA requirements preferred. Proficient computer skills and ability to use diagnostic software. Possess and maintain required certifications (PHMSA OQ, HUET, TWIC Card). Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and in a team environment. Flexible and adaptable; able to prioritize and meet deadlines under pressure. Possess and maintain required certifications, e.g., PHMSA Operator Qualification, HUET, TWIC Card.
