Responsibilities include overseeing and assisting with various landfill activities such as solid waste placement, daily cover application, site grading, litter control, erosion control, and equipment operation. May also assist in site maintenance tasks including road upkeep, stormwater management features, and environmental compliance measures. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Landfill Supervisor. The Landfill Crew Lead provides direct supervision and work guidance to a crew of subordinate workers. Essential Tasks & Responsibilities: · Provide hands-on guidance and support to Landfill Equipment Operators during daily operations. · Assist supervisors by helping train new crew members on safety procedures and equipment operation. · Operate and monitor heavy equipment, including dozers, compactors, and loaders. · Conduct routine equipment checks and report any maintenance or repair needs promptly. · Apply proper techniques for waste placement, compaction, and daily cover to meet permitting standards. · Assist supervisors with traffic flow within the landfill to maintain safety and operational efficiency. · Enforce OSHA, environmental, and city safety regulations consistently throughout the workday. · Assist with timely completion of waste screenings and truck inspections to prevent unauthorized materials. · Report daily operational updates and issues directly to supervisors or site managers. · Maintain professional communication with customers, drivers, and inspectors on site. · Assist with erosion control, litter containment, and leachate system maintenance to protect the environment. · Support adherence to local, state, and federal regulations governing landfill operations. · Assist with scale house duties such as processing payments, operating weigh station equipment, and maintaining accurate transaction records using Wasteworks software. · Be available for emergency on-call shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, supporting tasks such as leachate system monitoring, disaster response, and assisting with snow removal. Qualifications: Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Valid North Carolina CDL Class A or B with tanker endorsements and no restrictions, or the equivalent in another state. Certified North Carolina Landfill Operator. 3+ years of experience in landfill operations, waste management, or construction- related work. Proficient in operating heavy equipment, including dozers, compactors, loaders, excavators, road tractors, and dump trucks. Preferred Qualifications Strong work ethic with team guidance abilities. Basic accounting and computer skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to read and interpret site plans, maps, and technical drawings. Familiarity with landfill gas and leachate management systems. Experience with preventive maintenance and basic mechanical troubleshooting. Skilled in time management and task prioritization. Strong focus on safety and compliance with OSHA and NCDEQ permitting standards. Ability to remain calm and make decisions in fast-paced or adverse weather conditions. General Description The Excavator Operator will work in close proximity to equipment and people and operate an excavator to remove materials in a safe manner. * Operate a excavator in close proximity to equipment and the public safely. * Perform daily fluid level checks on oil, water and fuel; Visual inspection for obvious leaks and damage to machine before operation of equipment as well as safety equipment checks. * Responsible for daily maintenance of equipment to remain in proper and safe working order. Responsible for notifying supervisor if equipment needs to be repaired. * Other duties as assigned. Qualification Requirements * General. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each Key Duty satisfactorily.
