* Overall plans for the following month
* Active traffic incidents and emergency response crew status
10:30AM: You have a mid-morning check in with project manager, reschedule some field jobs (lack of proper materials), discuss traffic emergencies and overall status of the current day's jobs
11:00AM: Catch up on missed calls from clients, vendors, employees, corporate office
11:30AM: You have a scheduled lunch with a significant vendor/partner to negotiate a subcontractor agreement addenda and pricing schedules. Subcontractor needs to increase the current pricing 20% beyond your budget allowances. The subcontractor is a quality partner.
1:00PM: You head straight, unannounced, from the lunch directly into the field to your guardrail repair crew working alongside roadway shoulder of an interstate highway. You informally inspect the traffic control arrangement and notice a few items that should be corrected. You speak with the crew leader, walk the job briefly, drop the crew off cold drinks and head back to the office
1:43PM: You take a call from your project manager that needs an interpretation on a specification for the repair of a drainage headwall. You're driving on the interstate, take the nearest exit and park at a McDonalds. You pair your laptop to the wifi and look for the specification on the DOT's website. You find the exact dimension of the headwall, verify the reinforcing steel arrangement and concrete strength requirements. You call your ops manager back and explain to him the required dimensions. You additionally email him the specification-drawing directly.
2PM: You drive back to your office. Corporate HR schedules a virtual meeting to discuss a past incident with an employee involved in an at-fault driving incident. The discussion is confidential and you determine, with your manager, whether to attempt to rehabilitate the employee's behavior or move towards termination.
2:30PM: You work privately in your office planning a new maintenance schedule for the next month. You review analysis of data that shows where your assets are underperforming. You consider your budget overages and shortages. You make quick calls to your project manager to generate more opinions.
3:24PM: The project field crews are arriving back in yard. You do more informal vehicle checks, have some impromptu conversations with up-and-coming technicians. You make a point to go speak with your equipment/earthworks crew - they did a tremendous job on a very difficult work order assigned to them earlier in the week.
4:00PM. You debrief the day with the project manager and discuss tomorrow's plans. You discuss the night crew's schedule and make sure that all the subcontractor partners have been scheduled for the evening.
4:49PM: There is a sudden traffic emergency on the road causing massive traffic back-up. Your emergency crews were already mobilized and on scene starting to set-up temporary traffic control for fire-rescue. Coincidently the DOT District Engineer is in the traffic jam and calls their staff to figure out what's going on. Your direct DOT project manager calls you immediately and asks what your crews are doing for the emergency response.
5:13PM: You get back in your work truck and head home for the evening. You spend most the ride talking with your emergency crews that are on-scene at the traffic incident. You make a few calls back to your Client project manager and provide assurances of your emergency crew's plans for clearing the incident.
9:37PM (TEXT): Earlier you asked the project manager to have the night crew leader text you with some assurances that the night operation was moving as scheduled.
