Freedom Park company history timeline

1895

That location is intentional, as it used to be adjacent to a monument erected in 1895 to honor Confederate soldiers who died during the Civil War.

1925

It was first used as a theater in 1925.

1949

Wilson W. Wyatt, Sr.– Former Louisville mayor and Kentucky lieutenant governor, Wyatt also was a UofL trustee and made the first motion to desegregate the university in 1949.

1950

He then launched a campaign to desegregate UofL, which led the Kentucky General Assembly to end racial segregation in all Kentucky colleges and universities in 1950.

1951

Charles Henry Parrish, Jr.– UofL’s first African-American professor, he joined the university in 1951, the first African-American appointed to the faculty of a historically white university in the south.

2004

The Garden of Remembrance was officially handed over on 8 March 2004 by Thabo Mbeki, the president at the time, who said Freedom Park would not be a place of mourning, but a place of celebration and a tribute to humanity.

2008

Thabo Mbeki, as president of South Africa, gave his blessing to the park in June 2008, saying it was “a monumental tribute to freedom”. For all time, it would live on as a representative of:

In April 2009, the Freedom Park Trust was dissolved and the Freedom Park Cultural Institution came into being.

2013

Speaking at the opening in April 2013, then deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe said //hapo “is the product of our collective history, it also resonates with the imperatives of the present, as well as the edicts upon which our nation is founded”.
