Glendale Unified School District company history timeline

1901

1901- The first classes met in the dining room of the Glendale Hotel located where the school district offices are today at the corner of Isabel and Jackson.

1902

George U. Moyse was made principal in that building when it was occupied for the first time in 1902.

1909

From January to June, 1909, it was published monthly and sold to the students for 10 cents a copy.

1910

The Latin Club, "Comities," is the oldest Club in school formed in 1910.

1911

The school was known as Third Street Intermediate School when it first opened in 1911, located on the parking lot of what today is the District Administration Center.

1912

The school's first Speaker was Charles Wells.The first "G" Club for wearers of the big G was also formed in 1912.

1913

Gladys Hamilton was the original Imperator.The German Club was started by the senior class in 1913. "La Tertulia" is the name of the Spanish Club.

Later, eight classrooms were added.In 1913, Third Street was renamed Wilson Avenue by the City of Glendale.

1918

1918- The Harvard Street School building is seen in the distance on the left.

1921

In 1921-22 two bond issues were approved for a site on a 21-acre lemon orchard belonging to L.P. Lukins at Broadway and Verdugo Road.

1923

In 1923, six additional classrooms were opened as well as the auditorium.

1924

1929

The most visually striking change made during the Measure K project was to connect the upper and lower quads by creating an ampitheatre in the upper quad area as pictured right. It is the only high school that can claim it was named after a current president actually in office in September of 1929.

1931

George U. Moyse (as seen in 1931) was the second principal at Glendale High.

1933

In September of 1933, TRS opened its doors to 9th graders and went on to be named Theodore Roosevelt Junior High School.

1937

The Harvard Street School continued to operate until 1937, first housing the GHS Freshman class, then Glendale College.

1959

1960

Early 1960's- The front of school with the famous Bell Tower as seen from the corner of Broadway and Verdugo.

1972

1972- A student demolished the "Hoover Car" during the annual Homecoming Fair.

1993

In 1993, the school was renamed Theodore Roosevelt Middle School when the remaining 9th graders were moved to the Glendale High School campus and once again the school educated student in grades 7 and 8.

2010

In 2010, an extensive remodel of the other facilities was completed thanks to the voter approved Measure K bond.

2018

January of 2018 Doctor Chris Coulter was appointed to Director of Teaching and Learning and Doctor Narek Kassabian-Principal of RD White Elementary School was named the new Principal at Wilson.

2019

On May 7, 2019, the GUSD Board of Education Voted for the school to become Roosevelt STEAM Academy, a magnet school with an emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.
