They follow blueprints and use hand tools and shop machines. The pipefitter also cuts and bores holes in bulkheads and decks for installation of pipes. They operate shop machines to cut and thread pipe and pipe fittings. Pipefitters connect pipes to fixtures and test systems for leaks, ensuring that the system meets specifications. An experienced pipefitter will often work with an apprentice, sometimes called a tacker/helper. The position is characterized by problem solving and precision work. To be successful in this type of work, a pipefitter must be able to perceive pertinent detail in objects or blueprints. The above description is general in nature. A pipefitter may be required to perform additional duties not specifically described herein. HOURS: Typical hours for Pipefitter range from 40 to 70 hours per week. TRANSPORTATION: It is the responsibility of the worker to provide his or her own transportation to and from the facility. The pipefitter will weld pipe support brackets, connect pipes to fixtures and, to a lesser degree, fabricate lengths of piping systems onboard or within vessel modules. Physical Demands: Heavy items are positioned with a chainfall, overhead crane, or a come-along. Standing is again considered constant and walking occasional. Because workers commonly work in pairs, the 40lb maximum can generally be observed. The heaviest come-along can weigh in the 75lb range and could be handled occasionally during the course of a day, depending upon the job. Essential Function: An additional function is that the pipefitter is responsible for testing installed systems to ensure specifications utilizing hydrostatic and other pressurized equipment. Physical Demands: This function requires the individual to stand on a continuous basis. Job Description Aluminum Pulse Welder The Aluminum Pulse Welder welds together structural metal components as specified in blueprints, work orders or oral instructions. Key Responsibilities: Obtains the appropriate tools needed for a particular job and subsequently sets up their equipment. Binds together structural metal components that have been pre-assembled and tacked into place. Performs good, cosmetic sound welds. Examines his/her work and may chip off excess weld, slag, and splatter with the appropriate tools. (i.e. grinder, chipping hammer, etc.). Leaves little to no rework when the job is complete. (i.e. cold rolls, pin holes, wraps, burn throughs, etc.). Troubleshoots his/her equipment. May gouge/grind to remove a member, make a seam sound, remove weld reinforcement, etc. Must be able to work in confined spaces. Must be able to work to work/climb in elevations greater than 5". Must be able to wear/work a respirator when applicable. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: * High School Graduate and three years of experience in vessel operation. * Appropriate USCG Operator's license is required. * Must live within a 3-hour drive from LUMCON or willing to relocate after a trial period. The trial period is TBD at the discretion of the Captain. * Must pass drug and alcohol screening tests as mandated by the Department of Transportation. * Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this job, including heavy lifting with exposure to inclement weather conditions for prolonged periods of time. * Ability to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment, as necessary. IDEAL CANDIDATE/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: * Experience and knowledge of coastal waters between South Florida and South Texas. * Supervisory skills. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited the following: * Assists Captain in operation of the vessel including: steering; maneuvering; electronics, visual piloting and navigation using advanced technology; cargo handling and storage; handling lines, docking and departing; use of deck machinery; checking for water-tightness and normal machinery operation; launching, operating, and recovery of ship's small vessel. * Operates ship's radio, radar, depth sounders, on-board computer-based acquisition system and/or other appropriate equipment and advanced technology, as required. * Performs various vessel maintenance activities including deck and equipment repairs; cleaning, painting, and lubricating deck machinery, blocks, tackle, and other painted surfaces; making periodic checks on various equipment. * Performs various waterfront maintenance tasks including dock cleaning and maintenance. * Assists in fieldwork sampling activities including oceanographic research work and repair of sampling equipment. * Participates in ongoing research projects as necessary. * Serves as Relief Captain, as required, including supervising other crewmembers and scientists, providing indoctrination and safety instruction and drills. * Performs various "office management" duties with a working knowledge of both Microsoft Word and Excel software. * Strict adherence to purchase protocols; procuring bids, completing appropriate forms, filing appropriate forms, turning in essential receipts and associated approved paperwork in the prescribed time period. * Perform related duties, as assigned.
