Laboratory assistant job in Richmond, VA
Reports to the Department Manager, Supervisor or Lead Clinical Lab Scientist and is responsible for following established policies, procedures, and regulations. Performs/assists with various clinical laboratory test procedures and ensures proper maintenance and operation of instrumentation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Works with Manager, Supervisor or Lead Clinical Lab Scientist on a variety of laboratory projects.
Participates in PI, QA, and QC to ensure all regulatory requirements maintain an 'in compliance' status.
Functions in a charge or lead role as assigned for the days operations to ensure safe quality and efficient workflow, practices, staffing and operations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist in all disciplines by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP).
CPR Training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire for designated job roles.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent.
Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with physicians, nursing personnel and other clinicians relative to patient testing and information gathering.
Six to twelve months of laboratory training/job experience necessary in order to become familiar with a variety of laboratory testing procedures.
Ability to resolve technical problems using standard guides and procedures. Analytical skills necessary in order to perform and interpret routine tests and recognize abnormal/critical test results.
Must be able to determine the appropriate course of action for abnormal, atypical or critical test results.
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and other Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) software preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Laboratory service areas have work environments with frequent exposure to physical discomforts due to unpleasant odors from specimens and chemicals. Frequent exposure to infectious agents when handling hazardous material, but potential for personal harm or injury is reduced when proper safety and health precautions are followed.

Terms and Conditions apply** The Pathologist Assistant (PA) Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of the grossing area, autopsy suite and pathology operations in the morgue. The PA Supervisor works effectively with laboratory management, administrators and physicians to maintain competent staff in accordance with the VCUHS mission and vision.
The PA Supervisor is responsible for scheduling; policy development; general operational duties; training new hires and daily operation of the grossing area from specimen accessioning through specimen processing. The PA Supervisor provides technical instruction to lab personnel and residents and documents their training and competency; maintains laboratory procedure manuals and insures the regulatory compliance of these areas; and manages the technical QC/QA functions for these areas.
The PA Supervisor works in the technical capacity of a Pathologists' Assistant, assisting pathologists with the proper grossing of accessioned surgical specimens, the preparation for and performance of human postmortem external examinations and eviscerations at autopsy and resident training. In addition, the PA Supervisor will perform specific tasks and duties under the direction and supervision of Attending Pathologists. This position coordinates with Medical Director and supervises the mandatory training of residents of the Department of Pathology.

Certified as a Pathologists' Assistant by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) or certification eligible within 3 months from date of hire into position

Experience REQUIRED:
Minimum of 4 years of work experience as a Pathologists' Assistant with skills in surgical pathology and autopsy pathology. Lead level experience with increased responsibilities and expanded job duties.
Previous experience in histology, histology procedures and dissection.
Experience PREFERRED:
Experience as a PA working in an academic setting

BS Degree in Science from an accredited Pathologists' Assistant Program

Master's Degree in Science from an accredited Pathologists' Assistant Program
Independent action(s) required:
Perform independently and collaborate with Manager/Director any personnel management issues as required.
The Pathologist may delegate to the PA the responsibility for the examination/description, including color,weight, measurement and other characteristics of the tissue or other mechanical procedures for which a specific written protocol has been developed.
Troubleshoots any laboratory issues.
Perform independently routine maintenance of equipment, provision of supplies and cleanliness of work areas as needed.
Ability to work independently with direction from Manager/Medical Director as indicated.

Supervision of gross room, morgue and autopsy personnel, day to day workflow, schedules, equipment
Communicate with Manager/Director on a routine basis.
Open communication with other supervisors and staff.
Manage work schedules and work flow/TAT issues in area of responsibility.
Conduct performance evaluations for PA and other technical staff in said areas.
QC/QA reports and follow-up as indicated.
Assist with workflow as staffing indicates.
Troubleshoot issues as required.
Consult with Human Resources for performance and personnel evaluation

Monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained, and reporting any problem or concerns to assigned Technical Consultant or designee;

Ensuring that patient test results are not reported unless the test systems are properly functioning and reporting any test system problem to assigned Technical Consultant;
Submitting monthly staffing schedules for all lab personnel; approving payroll for lab personnel in a timely manner; and providing all lab orientation and in-service training to all testing personnel;
Assisting in interviewing lab candidates;
Assisting in on-site training of lab personnel and functioning as an administrator and working as a Laboratory Technologist/Technician at least two days per week;
Evaluating and documenting the competency of all testing personnel;
Evaluating all lab personnel at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months during the first year of employment and annually or as needed;
Assisting testing personnel in person or by telephone to resolve technical problems while testing is performed;
Maintaining records of laboratory tests for two years;
Implementing safety regulations as directed;
Reviewing lab inventory data and notifying the Director of Medical Support when adjustments are needed with inventory control;
Ensuring lab personnel understand all new and revised policies and procedures;
Ensuring all Charge Change and Courtesy write-offs are forwarded daily to the Administrative Services department;
Demonstrate proficiency in using the medical record system;
Maintaining a clean work area by performing biological cleanup in accordance with OSHA Guidelines, and completing other maintenance assignments as directed; Receiving and storing ordered supplies;
Being available as needed, as breaks and mealtimes may be interrupted at any time for patient care and to maintain center operations;

Must have a thorough knowledge of Medical Technology principles, concepts, and methodologies sufficient to perform a broad range of testing; Knowledge of mathematical and statistical methods sufficient to calculate and convert analytical data to test results is required;
Knowledge and skill sufficient to use and maintain laboratory instrumentation;
Knowledge of related disciplines to integrate and correlate test results with other laboratory data and clinical information;
Must be able to produce reliable quality laboratory results under stressful conditions;
Must be able to perform CPR and update certification as needed;
Must be able to hear pages, bells, and phone system;
Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time (possibly four to seven hours at a time);

The Weekend Lab Specialist is required to work a permanent Tuesday - Saturday shift. Hours of work for this position are typically 8 hours per day/5 days per week with a set schedule of Tuesday through Saturday.
The initial training period will be Monday through Friday.
In addition, some holiday work and on-call coverage is required.
Established Weekend Laboratory Specialists are required to achieve and maintain competence in multiple time-sensitive procedures that are critical to weekend operations. These competencies must be achieved within six (6) months of the effective hire date. Once the required competencies have been met and the employee transitions to the weekend shift, their salary will be adjusted to reflect the competencies they have attained and must sustain to support weekend operations.
As a member of the Data IT Support analytical team, these Lab Specialists support customer service efforts by:
Provide focused support for newborn screening and environmental testing.
Serve as a weekend customer service point of contact, providing reliable support to staff and clients.

Position Overview:
Lab technicians perform chemical measurements and other tasks to meet the expectations of our clients by efficiently and profitably generating defensible data on time. Job Description
