Lees-McRae College company history timeline

1900

Founded in 1900 by Reverend Edgar Tufts.

Has electricity of some form since 1900

In 1900, a frame dormitory for 12 girls and two teachers opened after a small amount of money was raised and labor and lumber was promised.

He named the school The Elizabeth McRae Institute after a well-respected educator in 1900.

1907

The schools were chartered by the state in 1907 as the Lees-McRae Institute.

An all-male branch was founded during 1907 in Plumtree, North Carolina.

1927

The Plumtree facility was destroyed in a 1927 fire, leading the two campuses to merge at the Banner Elk site.

1931

After the merge, the high school program was phased out and the institute was renamed in 1931 to Lees–McRae College, an accredited, coeducational junior college.

1933

1933 Wildcat Lake built for Hydroelectric Power and built by students.

1940

That this was the first year since 1940 for intercollegiate football.

1987

In 1987, the Board of Trustees of Lees-McRae College voted to seek senior college status.

1990

In June of 1990 LMC beacame a senior (four-year) college.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools granted Lees-McRae status as a four-year college in 1990.

2005

In 2005, Lees-McRae became the first expansion site for New Opportunity School for Women, a program that helps educate and employ women in Appalachia.

2018

In 2018, the college added its first graduate program—a Master of Arts in Teaching in Secondary Education.

2022
