In 1959, under contract to the newly formed NASA, Lovelace tested 32 candidate pilots using a seven-day series of rigorous physiological and psychological tests, culminating in selection of the seven Project Mercury astronauts.
LSR was established in 1987 in Albuquerque, New Mexico as a subsidiary of the Lovelace Medical Foundation.
Since 1991 the Foundation has operated as the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute (LRRI) and functions independently of the Lovelace Health Systems.
Founded in 1998, the MRN’s initial plan called for the building of state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetoencephalogram (MEG) neuroimaging systems to be applied to studies of mental illness.
In 2011, MRN partnered with Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute in Albuqerque.
