    The Highway Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and repairing Freeborn County vehicles and heavy equipment and ensuring equipment is properly maintained according to County, State and Federal regulations and guidelines. Duties and Responsibilities - Performs repairs and maintenance on vehicles transmissions, brakes, hydraulic systems, ignition systems, exhaust systems, drive train components and electrical operations ensuring that all work is performed in compliance with Federal and State safety regulations. - Prioritizes vehicle repairs and determines when outside contracting services are necessary to perform repairs. - Cuts, welds and fabricates metal alloys. Operates equipment such as cutting torches, welders, plasma cutters, drill presses and metal lathes; determining the size and type of materials necessary to perform repairs and identifying the type of joining process to use. - Tests, analyzes and inspects repairs performed on County equipment by operating various diagnostic equipment. - Plans and implements preventive maintenance schedules. - Assists in the preparation of bid specifications for additional or replacement equipment. - Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment including determining the urgency of the repair; coordinating the transportation of equipment to the repair shop; and arranging for equipment replacements for field employees as necessary. - Consults with vendors to ensure timely receipt of supplies and equipment including placing orders, preparing purchase orders, resolving shipping and order receipt problems, and informing vendors of any special supply needs or shipping requests. - Places utility locate requests via the MN Gopher State one call system. - Performs computer data entry. - Available on-call outside of normal work schedule as needed. - Attends training, educational and staff meetings as assigned. - On call 24/7.
