Summary:
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) is responsible for conducting and overseeing a wide range of laboratory tests across multiple disciplines, including chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, and blood banking. Essential Work Functions:
Perform complex laboratory tests and interpret results across various lab disciplines, such as blood bank
Oversee and validate test results, troubleshoot discrepancies, and approve diagnostic reports before release
Operate, calibrate, and maintain sophisticated lab instruments and automated analyzers
Ensure compliance with AABB, CAP, CLIA, FDA, and other regulatory standards, actively preparing for audits and inspections
Conduct advanced immunohematology testing, including antigen identification and antibody identification
Develop and implement laboratory policies, procedures, and quality assurance programs
Assist in training and mentoring lab staff
Supervise lab personnel, assign workloads, and provide performance evaluations as needed

Role:
We are seeking multiple CLIA Clinical Lab Technologists based at our Houston, TX, facility. They will be responsible for performing technical and scientific processes and procedures in a high-complexity testing CLIA-certified laboratory. This position will require the technologist to master multiple systems, instruments, and methodologies.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for performing molecular-based technical and scientific processes and procedures in a high complexity testing CLIA-certified laboratory.
Perform molecular and immunocytochemistry assays, including tumor cell enumeration (TCE), Immunocytochemistry (ICC), Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH), and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), for clinical, research, and diagnostic applications.
Accurately document all testing activities in accordance with laboratory policies and accreditation requirements. Prepare for and participate in inspections by accrediting bodies.
Analyze and evaluate test results in conjunction with quality control data under supervision. Review and release patient results with appropriate oversight. Assist colleagues with complex procedures or result interpretation as needed.
Train and orient new laboratory personnel on procedures, instrumentation, and workflows

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Specimen processing, test performance, and reporting tests results
Ensure that laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results are followed. Demonstrate a complete understanding of established policies and procedures as outlined in the procedure manual.
Recognize any questionable patient results and repeat and or verify before being released. Notify the supervisor of any unresolved problems.
Correct all errors immediately upon discovery.
Ensure that STATS and critical values are called and turned out as soon as completed to the appropriate personnel and document and initial all action taken in the computer.
Notes concerning unsatisfactory specimens, specimens obtained incorrectly, abnormal appearance, or condition of specimen must be documented in the computer. Notify the proper personnel to obtain another specimen when needed.
Ensure patient testing has the highest priority over other section functions
All proficiency-testing samples must be handled in the same manner as patient testing.
Laboratory quality control policies must be followed. Investigate any unsatisfactory results and correct prior to releasing patient reports. Notify supervisor of any unsolved problems.
Laboratory policies and procedures must be followed whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
Perform preventive maintenance on all instruments according to established procedures, ensuring that all maintenance and repairs are documented.
Identify problems that may adversely affect the performance or reporting of test results.
Document all corrective action and notify supervisor.
Ensure that incomplete projects from the previous day are followed through and communicated to the testing personnel in the department that day.
Ensure the handling and loading of reagents and supplies is in accordance with established procedures for each test and instrument and that no supplies or reagents that are outdated are used unless manufactures statement is in place confirming acceptable performance.
Rotate supplies and reagents so that earlier expiration dates are used first. Notify supervisor if supplies or reagents are getting low.
Upon receipt of supplies/reagents date and store properly, record in supply book documenting date received, lot #, and expiration date where applicable.
Assist others when possible
Keep technical and job knowledge skills up to date.
Be familiar with all procedures in the safety manual and ensure that all procedures are followed according to lab policy.
Immediately report any recognizable safety problem to the lab supervisor or manager.
Promptly complete and submit an incident report form to the lab manager when any incident occurs involving an employee or patient.
Ensure work areas are kept clean and spills are contained and cleaned immediately.
Responsible for learning requirements for insurance contracts.
Collect specimens as needed.
Provide excellent service to both internal and external customers.
Perform other tasks as assigned.

In This Role:
* You will be using automated analyzers, microscopes and other laboratory diagnostic tools to perform analyses and tests that diagnose animal illnesses, injuries and diseases in support of veterinarian animal treatment.
* You will be performing diagnostic tests on blood, urine, fecal or pet biopsy samples that we receive in our lab by the thousands, every day.
* You will be responsible for setting up and running lab tests and reading and releasing results according to SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures).
* You can expect to specialize in one or more of the following areas:
* Hematology: Testing cell-related components of blood samples to enumerate and identify their cellular components, including the microscopic evaluation of blood smears and the use of automated and manual counting techniques.
* Chemistry / Endocrinology: Testing blood and body fluids for various analytes, utilizing automated instrumentation.
* Urinalysis: Analysis and evaluation of chemical and microscopic components of urine samples, using automated instrumentation and manual techniques.
* Cytology: Processing blood and body fluids for microscopic examination by pathologists. Includes slide preparation and staining, utilizing manual and automated counting techniques.
* Immunology / Serology: Testing blood and other samples for the presence of viral and bacterial disease by detecting antibodies (AB) or antigens (AG).
What You'll Need to Succeed:
* You have a clinical pathology skillset-either in veterinary or human laboratory setting
* Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Serology skillset
* You have a strong veterinary laboratory skillset
* A 2-, 3- or 4-year degree in a Science-related field is preferred.
* It is not required to work in our lab, but if you were a Veterinary Technician (RVT, LVT, CVT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT or MT), this experience and education would be a plus.
* Ideally, you will have experience setting up, running, and reading lab tests, and operating laboratory equipment (microscopes, pipetting and / or clinical diagnostic analyzers).
* You have a positive attitude and love to bring that energy into the lab every day to support your colleagues

* You concentrate on the details and can work reliably and precisely
* You have a great sense of team spirit and responsibility

Perform routine and specialized assignments and demonstrate proficiency and understanding of the procedure in the area of a clinical laboratory under the direction of a Medical Technologist
SUPERVISION: Reports directly to the Assistant Director of Pathology
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Performs blood collection procedures using skin (capillary) puncture and venipuncture.
Performs specialized collection procedures i.e. crossmatch blood cultures, glucose tolerance, urine drug screen collection, PKU/T4, therapeutic phlebotomy.
Keeps blood drawing trays and equipment clean and well organized.
Recognizes anatomic regions and components of the circulatory system.
Utilizes proper hand washing.
Ensure proper collection for specimen integrity.
Utilizes laboratory computer system, collection lists, and pending logs.
Practice methods of preventing infection during venipuncture/skin puncture.
Performs testing allowed by State of Louisiana License and has been deemed competent by Section leaders.
Performs selected manual procedures under the supervision of a Medical Technologist.
Assists the Medical Technologist in operating various types of laboratory equipment to perform tests in chemistry, bacteriology, urine analysis, hematology, etc., under the direction of the Medical Technologist.
Procure and plant Microbiology specimens.
Prepare storage of specimens for later testing.
Dispose of tissue specimens, slides and blocks.
Operate centrifuges in various sections of laboratory.
Handles biohazard waste appropriately.
Performs supply inventory.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
High school graduate or equivalent required.
Preferred: At least two years of experience in laboratory specimen processing and/or phlebotomy OR successful completion of a phlebotomy program OR Laboratory-related college courses including Clinical Laboratory Assistant associate degree program or bachelor's degree coursework in Biology, Chemistry, or related fields.
Louisiana State License as a Laboratory Assistant.
License preferred at time of hire. If candidate otherwise meets minimum requirements; license must be obtained within 90 day introductory period.
Basic computer skills; phlebotomy skills; basic laboratory skills.
