Responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures to fulfill the requests of the prescribing physician. Performs clinical testing in any or all of the following laboratory areas: blood bank, chemistry, coagulation, hematology, immunology, microbiology, urinalysis, and may include phlebotomy. The lab scientist works independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines.
RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS):
Ensures all patient specimens are resulted accurately and on time. Provides accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory according to established laboratory protocol and procedures. Reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures to ensure that all patients receive appropriate treatment promptly.
Maintains required records and documentation. Reads, understands, and complies with departmental policies, protocols and procedures. Maintains all appropriate maintenance logs. Perform basic clerical duties.
Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and reports discrepancies to the appropriate supervisor to guarantee the lab maintains utmost quality.
Performs daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate to ensure that all equipment is in working order. Performs calibration of equipment as required. Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur. Notifies the supervisor if unable to solve problems.
Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow team members to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment. Greet others appropriately. Treat everyone in a professional, courteous manner.
Communicates all unresolved problems immediately to the appropriate manager or supervisor for resolution.
Attends educational conferences and seminars to stay updated on laboratory methodology, instrumentation, procedures, and policies to offer the highest quality testing to the laboratory.
Keeps work area neat and clean. Disposes of biohazards appropriately.
Helps with inventory. Stock supplies as needed.
Practice infection control standards at all times. Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures to protect all patients and team members. When handling blood and/or body fluids, standard precaution procedures will be followed in order to minimize exposure to infectious diseases.
Attends all required safety training programs to stay up to date on the latest safety precautions and procedures and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards. Follows the hospital exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens. Must adhere to safety protocols at all times.
Regular attendance and punctuality for scheduled shifts.
Participates in the On-Call rotation schedule.
Appropriately adapts assessment, treatment, and/or care methods to accommodate the physical, cultural, age-specific, and other developmental needs of each person served.
Maintains professional and technical knowledge through continuing education opportunities including internal and external educational offerings.
Utilization of assistive devices for lifting is mandatory.
Per DRH policy, all required conditions of employment must be met and maintained including required vaccinations.
This position requires respirator and fit testing. Required testing will be performed on all team members at risk for exposure to airborne infectious diseases, droplet producing procedures, or any caustic chemicals.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Communication skills including fluency in oral and written English. Basic computer skills including the ability to send/receive email, navigate information technology associated with the position, and use Electronic Health Record information tools. Ability to remain flexible to quickly adapt to urgent situations. Ability to adapt procedures, processes, tools, equipment, and techniques to accomplish the requirements of the position.
Ability to organize and prioritize workload. Strong attention to detail, precision, and commitment to accuracy.
Skill in handling multiple priorities in a high-volume setting.
Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemical, physical, or biological science from an accredited institution. Broad knowledge of laboratory procedures to include laboratory equipment and use of a laboratory information system required. Moderate knowledge of medical terminology required.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations: Current ASCP medical lab scientist licensure. For those positions requiring travel, a current valid driver's license and automobile liability insurance must be maintained.

Basic Requirement for Supervisory Clinical Laboratory Scientist:
A. A Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree from a regionally accredited college/university including courses in biological science, chemistry and mathematics, AND successful completion of a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
OR
B. At least a full 4-year course of study that included 12 months in a college or hospital-based medical technology program or medical technology school approved by a recognized accrediting organization. The professional medical technology curriculum may have consisted of a 1-year post- bachelor's certificate program or the last 1 or 2 years of a 4-year program of study culminating in a bachelor's in medical technology.
OR
C. A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree from an accredited college/university that included 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology), 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry (with one semester in organic or biochemistry), one semester (one quarter) of mathematics, AND five years of full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, microbiology, Immunology and Urinalysis/Body Fluids. This combination of education and experience must have provided knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of medical technology equivalent to that provided by the full 4-year course of study described in A or B above. All science and mathematics courses must have been acceptable for credit toward meeting the requirements for a science major at an accredited college or university. Acceptable experience is responsible professional or technician experience in a hospital laboratory, health agency, industrial medical laboratory, or pharmaceutical house; or teaching, test development, or medical research program experience that provided an understanding of the methods and techniques applied in performing professional clinical laboratory work. Certification/licensure as a medical technologist (generalist) obtained through written examination by a nationally recognized credentialing agency or State licensing body is a good indication that the quality of experience is acceptable.
Evaluation of Education and Experience: The four major areas of clinical laboratory science are microbiology, clinical chemistry, hematology, and immunohematology (blood banking). Qualifying course work in these areas includes bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, tissue culture, virology, parasitology, endocrinology, enzymology, toxicology, urinalysis, coagulation, hemostasis, cell morphology, immunology, serology, immunoserology, immuno-deficiency, hemolysis, histocompatibility, cyto-genetics, and similar disciplines or areas of laboratory practice.
Related fields include physiology, anatomy, molecular biology, cell biology, embryology, pathology, genetics, pharmacology, histology, cytology, nuclear medicine, epidemiology, biostatistics, infection control, physics, statistics, and similar areas of science where the work is directly related to the position to be filled.
Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0644 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes monitoring quality control in a clinical laboratory, providing guidance to medical laboratory personnel, AND assisting with monitoring the work performance of medical technologist. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Certification: Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) is required. Level II: Minimum requirements for this position are a high school diploma and at least one year of experience performing technical or non-technical laboratory procedures; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one college-level laboratory science course for every six months of the required experience.
