Duties/Responsibilities of the Job:
Responsibilities are interchangeable within job titles of medical lab technician/ medical laboratory scientist (MLS), medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist. Work environment/department will be listed in requirement.
Core Responsibilities/Essential Functions
• Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria.
• Perform routine and complex technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Associate or Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or meet local regulatory (CLIA & State) requirements.
• Minimum 0-2 years of clinical laboratory testing experience is required.
• State Medical Technologist license may be required.
• ASCP or AMT certification is either preferred.
• Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
• Proficient with computers; Familiarity with laboratory information systems is a plus.
• High level of attention detail along with strong communication and organizational skills.
• Must be able to pass a standardized color vision screen.
• Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs
This is an onsite role. Candidates will be expected to be onsite every day.

PURPOSE
Under general supervision and following established laboratory procedures, performs routine medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Communicates information such as test results, normal ranges, and specimen requirements to authorized sources.

Ensures that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning.
Responsible for administering testing according to policies and procedures.
Responsible for applying Total Quality Management (TQM) guidelines to laboratory processes.

POSITION INFORMATION:
Certified Medical Laboratory Technicians/Clinical Laboratory Technicians (MLT/CLT) will provide diagnostic testing services to The Central Texas Veterans Healthcare System in Temple, Texas.
Must possess comprehensive knowledge of professional Medical Laboratory Technician principles, practices, concepts, and theories providing for sound independent work.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
Medical Laboratory Technician/Clinical Laboratory Technician (MLT/CLT):
Technician must have a 2-year Associates in Applied Science Degree
Technician must have a minimum of two (2) years of laboratory experience
Technician must be American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or American Medical Technologists (AMT) certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician/Clinical Laboratory Technician.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Is expected to use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results
Will perform, evaluate, interpret, correlate, and validate the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results
Requires a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision
Will be required to monitor quality control systems and measures
Requires the ability to interpret and apply complex written instructions
Must utilize basic knowledge of laboratory equipment and be able to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation
May need to resolve problems encountered in the laboratory
Must be able to communicate, consult, and interact with other members of the healthcare team, external relations, customer service, and patient education
Will perform a broad range of laboratory procedures, including advanced and complex laboratory procedures. Must be able to recognize deviation from expected results and use scientific principles to analyze and correct problems
Evaluate and solve problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis accounting for physiologic processes and requirements
Maintain and document the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment. Use, calibrate, and identify malfunctions; repair and perform preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment
Troubleshoot issues with laboratory instruments and resolve problems. Diagnose deviations in test performance due to instrument malfunction
Perform and document quality control and quality assurance activities and corrective actions related to test performance using statistical principles and theories of performance improvement
Identify discrepancies, solve problems, and present solutions
Answer inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity, test sensitivity, and specific factors that influence test results. Interpret results and suggest follow-up test selection or procedures
Must meet all acceptable quality and productivity standards as defined by Chief, P&LMS or designee

What we are looking for:
The Lab Tech is instrumental in providing a variety of support functions that are critical is assisting the Lab Manager and helping ensure smooth operations of the lab. The Lab Tech functions as an integral and collaborative member of the healthcare team, displaying professional behavior and communicating effectively with others. Laboratory tasks related to receiving, organizing, and preparing patient tissue samples for macroscopic evaluation by the Grossing Technician. These include (but not limited do: Confirming patient identity, accessioning specimens and preparing and correctly labeling specimen blocks.
Gross entry - Assisting with entering information provided by the Grossing Technician into the patient's electronic medical record.
Laboratory tasks related to receiving, organizing, and preparing patient tissue samples for microscopic evaluation by the Dermatopathologist. These include Correctly labeling completed slides and slide packaging and send-out.
Assisting with laboratory send-outs to include slide and block requests.
General lab maintenance to include slide and block organization and storage and Maintenance of CLIA required records and documentation.
Assistance with completing and maintaining all compliance related paperwork to include temperature and humidity information, chemical reagent log sheets, patient information logs, and quality assurance forms.
Adhering to all safety protocols.
Provides excellent customer service by greeting them in a competent and courteous, in person or on the telephone and answering or referring inquires.
Responsible for accurately and timely completing documentation using both Electronic Medical Record and any required paper documentation while ensuring patient confidentiality.
Ensures that blood/body fluids, biohazard materials, needle containers and potentially infectious waste are appropriately disposed of, according to infection control guidelines.
Monitors expiration dates and takes action accordingly. Recognizes usage trends affecting unit supplies and makes recommendations for adjustments.
Participates in staff meetings and workgroups by providing constructive input for practice improvements and solutions.
