**Job Description**
The National Laboratory of the Rockies' (NLR) cybersecurity research is strengthening our grid against tomorrow's threats. This position supports the laboratory's Energy Threat Analysis Center (ETAC) with research efforts that includes but may not be limited to:
+ Cyber-physical vulnerabilities (e.g., energy systems, industrial control systems, distributed energy systems)
+ Threat modeling and implementation of adversarial Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs) using state-of-the-art modeling and simulation tools
This internship will include exposure to cybersecurity subject matter experts across the Department of Energy laboratory complex, and private industry utility experts.
Responsibilities for this internship will include but may not be limited to:
+ Develop attack scenarios within a modeled utility environment
+ Use open-source tools to create system models used to validate the effectiveness of adversarial TTPs
+ Contribute to the software development efforts of the NLR Cyber Range
+ Collaborate with NLR research staff to develop AI tools and processes to accelerate research and understand AI's impact on electricity systems
+ Analyze cybersecurity artifacts within test environments to assess adversarial scenarios
+ Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team

**Basic Qualifications**
Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor's degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor's degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

**Job Description**

**Job Description**
The Computational Modeling group in the BEST directorate at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) is seeking an summer undergraduate or post-undergraduate research intern to perform computational modeling and data analysis to enable optimization and scale-up of catalytic bioenergy processes.
The intern will work closely with other computational scientists and experimentalists to perform, analyze, and validate simulations of biomass and other feedstocks undergoing catalytic and thermochemical conversion processes using process scale models.
Responsibilities include:
+ Performing simulations using high-fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and reduced order models of transport and reactive processes within catalytic reactor systems
+ Implementing kinetic schemes into reduced order models and performing optimization routines to fit kinetic parameters
+ Analyzing validation experiments
+ Programming scripts to analyze results from simulations
+ Providing regular written and oral progress updates at project meetings
+ Working safely and independently in a laboratory setting
+ Planning and executing research in collaboration with other researchers
+ Contributing to the creation of technical reports and peer-reviewed publication
+ Working effectively in a large, multidisciplinary, multi-institutional team of engineers and scientists.
The successful candidate will:
+ Engage with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists across multiple national laboratories
+ Gain experience in a range of computational modeling and data analysis techniques, including FEM/FVM and reduced order modeling using software packages that are relevant to the field

**Job Description**
This position is looking for a year-round intern (summer intern is also acceptable) who has strong technical background in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligent (AI) applications in cyber-physical power systems, ideally on the distribution grid with distributed energy resources (DERs). The intern will work on projects developing learning-based analytics, and cyber-attack-resilient control strategies and optimizations for power distribution systems. The intern will also be responsible for conducting literature review, identifying gaps and summarizing new research opportunities. The ideal candidate should be able to conduct research work independently and also collaborate with project PI and other researchers from the project team.

**Job Description**
The Grid Optimization and Control Group at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) is looking for a highly motivated intern to join our team and support the development of **composite data center load models** for transmission planning studies. The internship will focus on building and validating both **detailed EMT (electromagnetic transient) models** and **RMS-based phasor models** to represent the unique characteristics of modern data centers. With the rapid growth of data centers as critical loads on the grid, this work will directly contribute to improving reliability, stability, and protection strategies for transmission systems.
**Main job duties include:**
+ Gather and analyze technical data on data center electrical architecture, including UPS systems, PDUs, cooling systems, and backup generation
+ Develop and validate component-level models (e.g., UPS with PFC, PDU, VFD), and build a **composite data center load model** that integrates IT load, power electronic interfaces, and motor-driven auxiliaries
+ Implement detailed **EMT models** in simulation platforms (e.g., PSCAD, RTDS) to capture fast transients and fault behavior
+ Validate the EMT models using real-world data

**Job Description**
The Bioenergy Science and Technology (BEST) directorate within NLR performs a full range of research from exploring biomass at the molecular level through biorefinery process optimization to bring bio-products to market. The directorate has recently expanded its research focus to include analysis, characterization, biochemical processes, bioenergetics, thermochemical processes, polymer science/synthesis, and plastic recycling and upcycling.
The RRES center within the BEST directorate is a talented team of scientists and technicians working in biological, chemical, and catalytic research approaches to renewable energy and materials for a circular economy. The center has strong thrusts in polymer design and upcycling, separations, synthetic biology and bioconversion, analytical sciences, computational modeling, and lignocellulosic chemistry and catalysis.
Our group is conducting research to investigate the catalytic upgrading of furfurals to hydrocarbons for blending into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from a variety of feedstocks included but not limited to nonrecyclable municipal solid waste and corn stover.
Our team brings together a wide range of technical expertise with a passionate drive to increase the technoeconomic feasibility of producing advanced drop-in fuels with particular emphasis on the aviation sector. This internship position is hiring for full time/part time work on-site with NLR's Separations Group starting in February 2026. As a year-round internship, the ideal candidate will be available for a one-year internship commitment. This intern will provide researchers with the support necessary to safely achieve their cutting-edge research-homogenous/ heterogeneous chemical catalysts for dehydration, condensation and hydrodeoxygenation reactions. This will involve the synthesis, testing, and characterization of heterogeneous catalysts leading to production of hydrocarbons with boiling points and other properties that make them suitable as jet fuels. Candidates will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team. The successful candidate will perform hands-on tasks and experimentation in a laboratory setting including:

**Job Description**
The Computational Modeling group in the BEST directorate at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) is seeking an summer undergraduate or post-undergraduate research intern to perform computational modeling and data analysis to enable optimization and scale-up of catalytic bioenergy processes.
The intern will work closely with other computational scientists and experimentalists to perform, analyze, and validate simulations of biomass and other feedstocks undergoing catalytic and thermochemical conversion processes using process scale models.
Responsibilities include:
+ Performing simulations using high-fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and reduced order models of transport and reactive processes within catalytic reactor systems
+ Implementing kinetic schemes into reduced order models and performing optimization routines to fit kinetic parameters
+ Analyzing validation experiments
+ Programming scripts to analyze results from simulations
+ Providing regular written and oral progress updates at project meetings
+ Working safely and independently in a laboratory setting
+ Planning and executing research in collaboration with other researchers

**Job Description**
The Grid Optimization and Control Group at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) is looking for a highly motivated intern to join our team and support the development of **composite data center load models** for transmission planning studies. The internship will focus on building and validating both **detailed EMT (electromagnetic transient) models** and **RMS-based phasor models** to represent the unique characteristics of modern data centers. With the rapid growth of data centers as critical loads on the grid, this work will directly contribute to improving reliability, stability, and protection strategies for transmission systems.
**Main job duties include:**
+ Gather and analyze technical data on data center electrical architecture, including UPS systems, PDUs, cooling systems, and backup generation
+ Develop and validate component-level models (e.g., UPS with PFC, PDU, VFD), and build a **composite data center load model** that integrates IT load, power electronic interfaces, and motor-driven auxiliaries
+ Implement detailed **EMT models** in simulation platforms (e.g., PSCAD, RTDS) to capture fast transients and fault behavior

**Job Description**
This position is looking for a year-round intern (summer intern is also acceptable) who has strong technical background in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligent (AI) applications in cyber-physical power systems, ideally on the distribution grid with distributed energy resources (DERs). **Job Description**
The Geospatial Data Science (GDS) team within the Strategic Energy Analysis Center at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) is seeking a 6-12-month intern to support modeling and analysis. The GDS group conducts research at the intersection of energy deployment, big data science, and geospatial modeling and visualization. Our team of researchers develops and applies geospatial algorithms and methods to evaluate the deployment potential for energy technologies, including geothermal, hydropower, transmission, bioenergy, wind, and solar. Geospatial modeling at NLR enables detailed techno-economic assessment, capacity expansion, and power systems modeling of energy resources under a variety of regulatory, sociopolitical, and environmental factors from local to continental scales.
The successful intern candidate will support a large and diverse modeling portfolio with activities involving geospatial analyses, literature reviews, cartography, scientific programming, and tasks focused on data preparation, processing, and validation. This position will assist geospatial scientists in developing novel analytical solutions to complex challenges in energy siting, deployment, and adoption. Candidates should be interested in working in an interdisciplinary field, together with geospatial data scientists, software developers, and policy analysts, which will require excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Duties will include:
+ Manipulating multiple data sources, models, and software tools with scientific and engineering workflows for decision support and data analysis
+ Preparing and processing geospatial data using open-source desktop software and programmatic approaches
+ Conducting background research on data sets, current modeling approaches, and existing tools
+ Developing literature reviews under the guidance of research scientists
+ Programming and scripting in Python to conduct analysis and visualize data
+ Working in distributed computing environments including internal servers, NLR's high-performance computing (HPC) system and the Cloud

**Job Description**
The Building Thermal Energy Science group of the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) is seeking an intern to support research and development for bio-based, building materials and their relation to waste products. We are developing and synthesizing these materials and determining mechanical properties and methods for manufacture. The candidate will contribute to new research in lignin-based building materials that are an effective alternative to cement/concrete and wood products.
The intern will get the opportunity to be involved in detailed experimental research and linking knowledge to several other aspects of systems engineering. Moreover, the candidate will be able to learn different techniques and measurement equipment utilized for thermal, mass transfer, mechanical, and chemical measurements.
**Job duties include but may not be limited to:**
+ Performing chemical modifications and characterization of lignin to form high-strength materials
+ Characterizing chemical and thermal properties of materials using tools like nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)
+ Characterizing mechanical properties of materials using tools like dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), tensile testing, 3-point bending testing, freeze-thaw testing, accelerated UV/heat/moisture aging tests, and compression strength testing
+ Scaling up synthesis and troubleshoot manufacturing issues
+ Assisting in project management, including writing reports, journal articles, and presentations for program review or conferences

**Job Description**
The Geospatial Data Science (GDS) team within the Strategic Energy Analysis Center at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) is seeking a 6-12-month intern to support modeling and analysis. The GDS group conducts research at the intersection of energy deployment, big data science, and geospatial modeling and visualization. Our team of researchers develops and applies geospatial algorithms and methods to evaluate the deployment potential for energy technologies, including geothermal, hydropower, transmission, bioenergy, wind, and solar. Geospatial modeling at NLR enables detailed techno-economic assessment, capacity expansion, and power systems modeling of energy resources under a variety of regulatory, sociopolitical, and environmental factors from local to continental scales.
The successful intern candidate will support a large and diverse modeling portfolio with activities involving geospatial analyses, literature reviews, cartography, scientific programming, and tasks focused on data preparation, processing, and validation. This position will assist geospatial scientists in developing novel analytical solutions to complex challenges in energy siting, deployment, and adoption. Candidates should be interested in working in an interdisciplinary field, together with geospatial data scientists, software developers, and policy analysts, which will require excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

**Job Description**
We are seeking a talented and motivated Power System Stability Analysis Engineer to join our team in a cutting-edge project focused on the stability analysis of power systems with a high penetration of Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs). As IBRs become increasingly prevalent, their integration into power grids presents unique challenges in grid stability, oscillation detection, and control. This project involves analyzing and interpreting real-time data from over 100 Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) installed across the system to identify grid disturbances, detect oscillations, and assess system strength.

**Job Description**
We are seeking a talented and motivated Power System Stability Analysis Engineer to join our team in a cutting-edge project focused on the stability analysis of power systems with a high penetration of Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs). As IBRs become increasingly prevalent, their integration into power grids presents unique challenges in grid stability, oscillation detection, and control. This project involves analyzing and interpreting real-time data from over 100 Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) installed across the system to identify grid disturbances, detect oscillations, and assess system strength.
Job Responsibilities include but may not be limited to:
+ Analyzing PMU data (from more than 100 PMUs) to monitor power system stability and detect grid disturbances
+ Create visualizations of grid strength and stability based on PMU Data such as heat maps of grid inertia, voltage profile, equivalent short circuit ratio etc.
+ Develop techniques that will improve the resilience and reliability of future power grids, particularly in systems dominated by IBRs
+ Produce detailed reports on oscillation detection, system strength assessment, and grid stability findings
+ Provide recommendations for mitigating potential stability risks
+ Collaborate with power system engineers, control experts, and software developers to refine system models, improve analysis techniques, and support operational decision-making
+ Contribute towards technical documentation and the generation of research papers

**Basic Qualifications**

+ Demonstrated experience in signal processing such as time-domain signal processing ( i.e. filtering, noise reduction, event and disturbance detection etc.) and frequency-domain techniques (i.e. fast Fourier transformation, mode and oscillation analysis etc.)
+ Demonstrated proficiency in python programming or other major programming language
+ Demonstrated experience in power system simulation software (e.g., MATLAB/SIMULINK/PSCAD)
