Naval Postgraduate School company history timeline

1909

On 9 June 1909, Secretary of the Navy George von L. Meyer signed General Order No.

Established in 1909, the Naval Postgraduate School has provided unique graduate education and research programs for more than 100 years.

1912

On 31 October 1912, Meyer signed Navy General Order No.

1943

The Navy's first wartime command at the new site was established in February 1943.

The Navy had come to Monterey during World War II, leasing the Hotel Del Monte in early 1943 for a preflight training school, subsequently using the facility for other training programs.

1944

The Del Monte Pre-Flight School graduated nearly 5,000 aviation cadets in 11 months before it was decommissioned in January 1944. (3:09)

1945

In 1945, Congress passed legislation to make the school a fully accredited, degree-granting graduate institution.

1951

The academic quadrangle was built incrementally after the school officially opened for business in 1951.

1968

1970

Founded in 1970 at the request of former Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Superintendent Rear Adm.

1971

1971: The foundation receives its second-ever donation, used to establish the Rear Adm.

1989

1989: The foundation starts supporting the Leadership Lecture Series (now known as Secretary of the Navy Guest Lectures). NPSF continues to sponsor post-lecture receptions to allow students to meet internationally known speakers.

1991

1991: The foundation hires its longest employee, Valerie Jensen, who is still with the foundation.

2003

2003: Pathway to the Future starts as a fundraiser for the school.

2003-04: The foundation institutes its first iteration of a membership model, with 100 founding members open to NPS faculty/staff and community members.

2006

In 2006, a $35 million renovation of the two wings of Herrmann Hall was completed, providing 140 new Bachelor Officers’ Quarters (BOQ) rooms for the school’s international officers and their families for temporary residency while they establish themselves in permanent living facilities.

2008

2008: The inaugural NPSF Grand Winter Ball takes place as the foundation’s annual fundraising event.

2008: The membership model expands to include NPS students, which offers several membership tiers.

2009

In 2009, the year the Naval Postgraduate School celebrated its centennial anniversary, Herrmann Hall began a series of renovations and refurbishments, restoring the building’s early 20th century charm in a tribute to its historic past.

2009: The NPSF Cycling Club forms and sparks the start of several other clubs.

2016

2016: The foundation starts the Seed Program through the Defense Innovation Fund to award $10k to NPS professors to turn their research ideas into action.

2018

From this first donation, the NPS Foundation was born and has since continued to grow and greatly expand the ways it supports NPS. In 2018, NPSF became the NPS Alumni Association & Foundation, as the organization officially established an alumni association for NPS graduates.

2019

In 2019, NPS renamed its business school, the Graduate School of Business and Public Policy, to the Graduate School of Defense Management (GSDM) in an effort to better signal its unique defense-focused identity and mission to strategic stakeholders and its academic peers.

2020

In December of 2020, NPS leadership officially commissioned the Wayne P. Hughes, Jr.

2021
