While in the academy, cadets earn a salary per the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) contract. Candidates with current New Jersey Police Officer Certification or approval of New Jersey Training Commission for police commission may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is the primary department charged with creating a safe and secure environment at Princeton University. DPS operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and is comprised of 164 staff members. The department consists of professional University police, security officers, dispatchers and administrators dedicated to providing best-in-class service to the community. DPS was originally recognized and awarded Law Enforcement Accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) in July 2015, and subsequently awarded reaccreditation status in July 2018 and July 25, 2022. CALEA serves as the “International Gold Standard for Public Safety Agencies” and oversees a rigorous accreditation process. DPS sworn University Police Officers have the authority of commissioned police officers with full power of arrest deriving their law enforcement authority from New Jersey statutes (Title 18A, Sections 6-4.2 and 6-4.5) and the Trustees of Princeton University. Title 18A, Section 6-4.5 provides that sworn University Police Officers “shall possess all the powers of policemen and constables in criminal cases and offenses against the law anywhere in the State of New Jersey [including the powers of arrest], pursuant to any limitations as may be imposed by the governing body of the institution which appointed and commissioned the person.” DPS sworn University Police Officers are licensed law enforcement officers as defined in NJSA 52:17B-67. University Police Officers are required to complete the same police academies and annual training as their municipal counterparts. Our University police officers, who are unarmed on a daily basis, have access to a police service rifle in limited situations. Police officers may access service rifles when there is an in-progress threat with an individual brandishing a firearm, an active shooter, or an individual actively committing serious bodily injury or death with a deadly weapon on or “contiguous” to campus. All police officers have qualified with a firearm while at the police academy and are required to attend mandatory in-service firearms training throughout the year to enable them to perform more efficiently and more safely. Documentation, audits, and regulatory compliance: • Monitors mandatory documentation maintained by researchers (e.g., post-operative monitoring, regular weighing for animals on water restriction) for the attending veterinarian. • Responsible for the oversight of procedural spaces to make sure all calibrations and maintenance is performed and documented. • Schedule regular maintenance of veterinary equipment, to ensure that equipment is functioning properly and to remain in compliance with regulations and guidelines. • Ensures, that drugs and supplies are not out of date. Assists LAR Management with performing monthly audits of LAR facilities. • Ensures that appropriate safety protocols are followed when hazardous materials are used in connection with research animals. Other duties as assigned: • Cross trains and provides absentee support for other veterinary technicians in other LAR facilities. • • Rotates with other veterinary technicians for week night, weekend and holiday coverage as needed. • Enters data accurately and timely into the electronic management systems, order and service request forms, veterinary logs, vivarium calendar, and time reporting system. • Perform Special Service Requests, as directed by management, provide technical skills training to the research community in support of IACUC-approved research protocols (e.g., animal handling and restraint, etc.) • Exhibit a willingness to assume additional responsibilities and increase knowledge, skills, and abilities. Qualifications ESSENTIAL Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, Competencies, and Abilities BA/BS in Animal Science or related field and/or • Veterinary Technology Degree from an AVMA accredited school and/or: - AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist Level - Minimum 2-3 years' experience working with laboratory animals in a responsibility described above. • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a laboratory animal resources team and ability to share knowledge with other animal care staff, students, and new researchers. • Ability to work independently and communicate well with different levels within the organization, and work well with a diverse team for a common goal consistent with the mission of the Laboratory Animal Resources Department. • Willing and able to work safely with biological and chemical hazards and able to lift a minimum of fifty (50) lbs., stand or walk continuously up to 6 hours per day, sit for up to 2 hours per day. • Basic knowledge of biology and behavior of laboratory animal species. • Ability to follow-up tasks from beginning to completion and carry out duties in accordance to supervisor deadlines and university policies. • Preserve confidential information and not disclose contents of this information except in the performance of the work assignment and in accordance with University and departmental policies and procedures. • The final candidate will be required to successfully pass a background check.
