The School Construction Authority was created in 1988 as a New York State public-benefit corporation by the New York State Legislature, which removed control of capital projects from the city's Board of Education in an effort to end corruption.
Since its creation in 1989, the Authority has been responsible for the design and construction of capital replacement and rehabilitation projects for the 1,400 school buildings under the jurisdiction of the NYC Department of Education.
In September 2020, 10 new schools and 12 new 3-K centers will open throughout the five boroughs adding a total of 7,061 seats citywide.
