Amazon Leo's Propulsion Team seeks a Flight Operations Engineer to support the execution of the full mission lifecycle for Amazon Leo's satellite constellation. This critical support spans: propulsion pre-launch and go/no-go decisions; early mission propulsion checkouts and commissioning; ascending each vehicle to the altitude and station necessary to provide customer service; formation keeping for the service life of each satellite; as well as the the descent and decommissioning of each satellite. This role will work with Amazon Leo's Mission Operations team, and other Guidance, Navigation, and Control operators to ensure the safe and effective execution of each satellite's mission.
The Propulsion Operations Engineer serves as a critical liaison between Amazon Leo's Mission Operations and the Propulsion Design Engineering team, executing approved operational responses while supporting the development of improved operational automation. This role combines hands-on operational support with the continuous improvement of processes and automated operational capabilities for the Amazon Leo Propulsion System.
A significant portion of the position focuses on developing and improving automated operational responses, including telemetry monitoring and flight data analysis. The engineer will be responsible for creating and reviewing new scripted operations procedures, enhancing existing automated sequences, and formulating responses to novel scenarios that arise. This work requires close collaboration with GNC and Propulsion design engineers (both hardware and software) to ensure all solutions align with established safety and operational parameters.
The role involves active participation in troubleshooting and investigating in-flight anomalies, working alongside propulsion subject matter experts and systems engineers. The engineer will contribute to maintaining propulsion system operational health by identifying and assessing potential risks, while also evaluating system health and maneuverability across the constellation, applying criteria approved by the Propulsion Design Engineering team.
Professional growth opportunities include potential cross-training in other GNC disciplines, such as attitude determination and control, and supporting the GNC's Flight Dynamics Operations team. This expansion of responsibilities helps ensure comprehensive understanding and support of constellation operations.
Given that automated constellation operations run continuously throughout the year, this position requires flexibility in work scheduling. Initially, the role may involve standard working hours with rotating 24/7 on-call responsibilities. As the team expands, the schedule will evolve to cover morning, night, and day shifts across all days of the week, distributed among a team of operators. This scheduling structure ensures continuous coverage and support for the constellation's operational needs.

About the team
Amazon Leo's Propulsion Design Engineering team is part of the broader Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) organization. The Propulsion Design team includes subject matter experts in propulsion technologies, systems engineers, test engineers, mechanical design engineers, and technical program managers. Flight operations is currently supported by this engineering team, and this role is part of an effort to hire and develop dedicated support for Flight Operations to support full scale constellation operations.

The Role
As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for providing engineering inputs integral to both small and large-scale hydro and dam projects. You will lead technical teams and mentor junior staff, support production, and coordinate delivery of engineering work products with multi-disciplinary project team members and external stakeholders. You will not only support and help grow the broader engineering team capabilities, but your particular focus will be on continuing the development of our hydropower capabilities and working with key staff in growing the business.
You'll also be involved in supporting project management duties, coordinating with internal and external clients as well as assisting with guiding and mentoring other engineers within the team. In this role you will lead teams conducting technical work involving turbines, generators, and their associated ancillary systems, as well as other balance of plant systems such as gates, hoists, cranes, pumping systems, lubrication systems, and other critical equipment at hydroelectric powerplants. You will lead teams conducting technical work for feasibility studies, engineering designs, preparation of construction drawings and specifications, and carrying out site visits and inspections. You will be working in a collaborative environment with a great team of engineers, technicians, scientists, and other industry-leading peers, and you will also interface directly with clients.
Key Responsibilities:
Design modifications to, or entirely new, mechanical systems related to dams, control structures, water retaining structures, and hydroelectric generating stations.
Execute multiple projects from the proposal stage through to completion. Projects will include a variety of small to large projects involving water resources, flood control, and hydroelectric sectors.
Conduct site investigations, condition assessments, and provide design and construction support.
Mechanical engineering design and refurbishment of cranes, hoists, hydroelectric turbines, generators, and other balance of plant systems.
Conduct feasibility studies for proposed designs and assess costs and benefits for alternatives in a systematic and thorough manner.
Preparation and review of reports.

About You
To fill the role, we're looking for an applicant to bring forward a good mix of qualifications and previous experiences. Some highlights should include:

What You Will Be Doing:
You will drive innovative data analyses and tools on the Nuclear Science team. You will extract information from diagnostics, write predictive neural nets for plasma simulation tools, and drive design by performing optimizations over multiple variables. Your expertise is data analysis and scripting, balanced with a knack for technical breadth. You will report to the Nuclear Engineering Manager in this onsite role located at our Everett, WA office.
You Will:
* Develop neural nets to predict plasma simulation outputs from inputs. Adapt such neural nets to be training tools for new operators to develop intuition on FRC formation and translation
* Write algorithms to extract information from noisy diagnostic data. E.g., recover individual pulse information from piled-up signals
* Perform multivariate optimizations as part of design processes and data analysis. E.g., optimize machine operating settings, machine architecture trades, or shield designs parameters
* Operate and analyze nuclear and plasma diagnostics on test beds and Helion's fusion systems: Polaris and Orion
* Run and analyze MHD or PIC plasma simulation codes
Required Skills:
* Master's degree in nuclear engineering, plasma physics, or equivalent experience documented by a presentation at a technical conference
* 3+ years of experience writing scripts to analyze data using Python, MATLAB, C++, or a similar language. Techniques include vectorization, reading/writing data files in loops, and version control using tools such as SVN or git repositories
* Experience solving multivariate optimization problems using methods such as gradient descent or genetic algorithms
* Experience building neural networks to predict outputs from simulation inputs or to process noisy diagnostic data
* Hands-on experience analyzing diagnostic data or running plasma simulation codes
* Diagnostic data experience includes: processing signals from digitizers/oscilloscopes, performing data cleaning (e.g., pile-up rejection), and deriving physical insights
* Plasma code experience including: running MHD or PIC codes, modifying input files, operating in Linux environments, and analyzing raw outputs to extract plasma parameters
