REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION LEVEL:
Bachelor's degree - with academic major or concentration in food and nutrition, food service management, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or related field, preferred. Training experience required. OR Associates degree with 3-5 years of experience working in large quantity food preparation, required. Must have experience and understanding of state food code, recognized certificate in food and nutrition, food service management, nutrition education, culinary arts or business, ServSafe certified. Training Experienced required.
EXPERIENCE DESIRED:
Three to five years of experience leading others in a supervisory capacity for a school food service program with multiple units, commercial food service operation or similar field desired.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Post-offer physical (funded by the District) required prior to starting position. Requires constant hearing, hand-eye coordination, mind-eye coordination; intermittent keyboarding, sitting and lifting. Frequent repetitive motions with wrists, hands, fingers, standing, walking and carrying.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES
Demonstrates and provides guidance to school site child nutrition staff.
Participates in planning and implementing staff development activities.
Onboard all new staff to understand department guidelines.
Train of new managers as needed.
Substitutes in a secondary school when manager is absent.
Ensures school operations meet the federal guidelines for child nutrition meal patterns as approved by the South Dakota Department Education for lunch, breakfast, and childcare.
Conducts school site visits establishing standard meal operations ensure program compliance, meal quality, food safety and customer satisfaction.
Participates in child nutrition leadership activities.
Works with the department leadership in recommending employment of school site child nutrition personnel in conjunction with human resources. Provides input in transfer, evaluation, and dismissal of child nutrition staff.
Provide written/recorded standards in sanitation which are in conformity with local and state codes.
Provides internal opportunities for professional growth of staff with respect to their position and using appropriate in-service education programs.
Performs other duties as assigned by the child nutrition director.

This opening is for a full-time position with the South Dakota Department of Health for a Registered Dietitian/Licensed Nutritionist (RD/LN) in the Office of Family Nutrition Services (OFNS). This role supports the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Supplemental Nutrition Program in the East region of the state. The RD/LN will work under the supervision of the Dietitian Manager to deliver vital nutrition services that directly impact family and community health. This position will provide participant case management, approve special formula requests, consult with healthcare providers, and review and assess high-risk nutrition cases to determine whether case management is required by a Registered Dietitian or can be assigned to other qualified staff.
Additional functions of the position include, but are not limited to:
determine participant eligibility including: identity, income, residency, and categorical and nutritional risk;
conduct nutrition and health assessments;
provide nutrition support and education;
provide breastfeeding support and education;
link participants to appropriate health and social resources;
offer nutrition related technical assistance to team members;
deliver nutrition education in community settings;
collaborate on setting nutrition, breastfeeding, and outreach goals for the population served;
provide additional maternal and child health services, including developmental screenings, infant safe sleep education, and promotion of immunizations, oral health, and other public health initiatives;
build and maintain collaborative relationships with community partners and providers to enhance referrals and explore innovative partnership opportunities.
Work hours extending beyond the 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. workday and on Saturdays may be required. Travel will be required to satellite sites and overnight stays may be required for service delivery, trainings, or meetings. Lifting will be required to do anthropometric measurements of infants and children. This position will be in-person, with the option for some remote after a training period, and may provide virtual services from a state office location.
Licenses and Certifications:
Must be licensed as a Nutritionist in South Dakota or eligible for licensure within one year of employment.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Master's degree required in human nutrition, public health nutrition, clinical nutrition, nutrition education, community education or foods and nutrition.
Dietetic internship or similar Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics approval required.
Must be a Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) or obtain registration with 365 days of hire.
Knowledge of:
motivational interviewing skills;
principles and practices of food and nutrition sciences;
principles and practices of lactation sciences;
infant/child developmental milestones.
Skills/Abilities to:
motivate participants to make decisions/goals to improve their nutritional status;
effectively provide nutrition and health information in both one-on-one and group settings, whether in person or through virtual platforms (such as Zoom, Teams, and telemedicine), phone, text, and online channels;

**Job Summary**
Plans, develops, and provides diet interventions, medical nutrition therapy, nutrition care and preventive counseling to individuals and groups in all areas of primary and specialty patient/resident care, acute care, skilled nursing, out-patient, and/or community settings. Provides medical nutrition therapy services and monitors nutritional care of clients/patients/residents of all ages including neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric as assigned. This includes determination of nutritional status through nutritional assessment, individualized care plans, provider order recommendations and implementation of nutrition therapy (including verbal orders, diet modification, nutrition support, oral nutrition supplements), education and counseling for disease and nutrition risk management, and evaluation of outcomes of medical nutrition therapy interventions. Additionally includes optimization of self-management education and skills in the care of clients/patients/residents with chronic conditions. Ability to recognize, evaluates, and provide for nutritional needs based on cultural, ethnic, and religious beliefs. Evaluates treatments or procedures for effectiveness using an evidence-based approach. Works on nutrition care protocols for the assigned area and acts as leader for the health care team in the implementation of the nutrition therapies. Educates on diet according to disease state, medical condition and health risk.
Incorporates new trends and techniques as necessary to design care plan and update standards of care educational material. Assists in tailoring clinical education and associated materials for use with clients/patients/residents, families and caregivers. Performs quality control and maintains a high standard in relation to infection control mechanisms for safety. Aware and conscious of individual's insurance coverage and reimbursement circumstances, and participates in clinical performance improvement activities, including research that tests new treatments or procedures for clinical evidence of outcomes.
**Qualifications**
Minimum of a bachelor's degree in dietetics or food and nutrition through an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) accredited program. *(After January 1, 2024, the ACEND requires anyone taking the registration exam to become a dietitian have a master's degree. Prior to January 1, 2024, individuals qualifying to take the registration exam need to have the minimum of a bachelor's of science degree in dietetics.)
Clinical nutrition experience through an approved coordinated undergraduate program or successful completion of post graduate internship required.
Currently holds Registered Dietitian (RD) license within the applicable state(s).
Registered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) required.
For applicable states, proof of a temporary/limited permit nutritionist license will be considered for registry eligible individuals in the event they are waiting to test for their CDR. Individuals will be allowed two exam attempts within three months of hire into their position.

Job Description

This includes determination of nutritional status through nutritional assessment, individualized care plans, provider order recommendations and implementation of nutrition therapy (including verbal orders, diet modification, nutrition support, oral nutrition supplements), education and counseling for disease and nutrition risk management, and evaluation of outcomes of medical nutrition therapy interventions. Additionally includes optimization of self-management education and skills in the care of clients/patients/residents with chronic conditions. Ability to recognize, evaluates, and provide for nutritional needs based on cultural, ethnic, and religious beliefs. Evaluates treatments or procedures for effectiveness using an evidence-based approach. Works on nutrition care protocols for the assigned area and acts as leader for the health care team in the implementation of the nutrition therapies. Incorporates new trends and techniques as necessary to design care plan and update standards of care educational material. Assists in tailoring clinical education and associated materials for use with clients/patients/residents, families and caregivers. Qualifications

The dietitian is responsible for the nutritional care of the patient within an assigned area of practice.
**What you will do**
+ Performs an accurate assessment within a timely manner of the patient's nutritional status including, but not limited to: obtaining and interpreting information in terms of the patient's nutritional needs, patient/family level of knowledge, ability and readiness to learn about nutrition requirements, cultural/religious needs, and physical/mental limitations.
+ Demonstrates knowledge of age-specific factors and performs satisfactorily related to patient's age, infant through geriatrics, as noted on unit specific guidelines and competencies.
+ Plans the delivery of medical nutrition therapy and implements an individualized outcomes based nutritional care plan specific to patient's needs with clearly defined, measurable goals.
+ Demonstrates ability to provide medical nutrition therapy to patients/family based on assessment needs.
+ Ensures continuity of nutrition care through communication with relevant care providers at mission and discharge.
+ Helps to effectively transition patients to a new care environment.
+ Documents all phases of the nutrition care process in a complete and concise manner. Develops and interprets patient education classes and/or materials.
+ Demonstrates ability to educate the public by planning and presenting lectures related to nutrition therapy and community nutrition.
+ Providing guidance to dietetic assistant in identifying and assigning patients to a nutritional risk level using screening/assessment policies and procedures.
+ Functions as an integral member of an interdisciplinary healthcare team as evidenced by active participation in team conferences, multidisciplinary care planning, and ongoing communication of outreach contracts.

**Required Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:**
+ Bachelor's
+ Some College Dietetic Internship or similar Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics approved program required, unless already registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
+ Registered Dietitian - Commission on Dietetic Registration within 180 Days
+ Licensed Dietitian - Licensing Board Licensed in the state based off job assignment as a Dietitian. within 180 Days
**Preferred Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:**
+ 1-3 years Experience and advanced certifications in specialty area
