WHAT YOU'LL DOThe Nutrition Specialist will plan, develop, and implement complex nutrition functions for the Texas Department of Agriculture's (TDA) Food and Nutrition (F&N) Division to contribute to the compliance of the Texas Nutrition Programs. You will provide consultative services and technical assistance to agency staff, governmental agencies, community organizations, and the general public. You will work under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIESAssist with the management of complex responsibilities, projects and activities of assigned F&N nutrition initiatives, including design, development, implementation, monitoring, and enhancement of a strategic work plan to establish goals, strategies, and tactics. Assist with contract management or grant services that support F&N activities, including grant/contract writing, ensuring the fulfillment of all terms as outlined in the contract, tracking of expenditures, and verifying and submitting invoices for payment. Develop nutrition reports, outreach materials, and other communication items. Provide consultative services and provide technical assistance to contracting entities and partnering organizations on nutrition regulations related to F&N programs, and develop strategies to help contracting entities comply with nutrition regulations. Review, track, and approve nutrition-related applications, waivers, and certifications, and provide ongoing technical assistance regarding these items. Develop and deliver training for staff and contracting entities, serve as a subject matter expert during training events, and develop and deliver presentations to varied audiences. Remain abreast of the current research, and trends in nutrition and interpret how they impact the division's goals and objectives. Serve as a nutrition liaison between the division and external entities, professional associations and other stakeholders. Develop surveys, analyze programs, data, and establish project metrics to improve assigned projects and Division goals. Follow all TDA policies and procedures. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION (The application must state how each of the following qualifications are met - resumes do not take the place of the required state of Texas application which must be completed in CAPPS or WIT. ) Bachelor's Degree in Dietetics, Food & Nutrition, Food Systems Management, Food Science, Food Service Management, or related field (one year of work experience related to the primary responsibilities may substitute for one year of college). Two (2) years work experience in nutrition work or work in interpreting nutrition guidelines or regulations. Valid driver's license. Educational Substitution: Master's degree Dietetics, Food & Nutrition, Food Systems Management, Food Science or related field or a licensure as a nutritionist or dietitian (in good standing) can substitute for an undergraduate degree and of work experience. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSCredential as a registered dietitian or licensed dietitian. Master's degree, with major coursework in Dietetics, Food & Nutrition, Food Systems Management, Food Science, Food Service Management, or related field. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIESKnowledge of food systems management, food science and technology principles; of federal and state government nutrition policies, regulations, issues, and federal program evaluation requirements; of food and nutrition as it relates to public health care; and of various aspects in institutional food service management.
