Salish Kootenai College company history timeline

1977

The college opened its borrowed doors to students in winter term 1977 as a newly formed tribal college and as a branch campus of Flathead Valley Community College of Kalispell.

SKC was chartered in 1977 by the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes.

Beginning in 1977 with 49 students, donated office space, and five dollars in the bank, its founders and early leaders methodically created a college respected both regionally and nationally for the breadth of its programs and professionalism of its administration.

1981

In 1981, the college formally disassociated from FVCC and became completely self-governing.

1984

• Salish Kootenai College was the first tribal college in the northwest to receive regional accreditation at the associate degree level (1984).

1989

• The first tribal college in the United States to offer a state and regionally accredited associate degree in registered nursing (1989).

1992

• The first tribal college to receive professional accreditation through the National League for Nursing for the associate degree in registered nursing (1992).

1994

The college was designated a land-grant college in 1994 alongside 31 other tribal colleges.

1995

• The only tribal college in the nation to offer a bachelor’s degree (environmental science, 1995) in a STEM discipline.

2000

• The first tribal college to receive accreditation through the National League for Nursing for the bachelor’s degree in nursing (2000).

2014

In 2014, SKC conferred 186 degrees in 33 majors.

2015

In 2015, a satellite designed by SKC students and faculty was successfully deployed into low earth orbit under NASA's CubeSat Launch Initiative, making it the first operational CubeSat designed by a tribal college.
