Kent School District provides paid training for eligible bus driver candidates hired as Bus Driver Trainees. Bus Driver Trainees are hired as a temporary employee while completing the 4-week training to obtain CDL Class B, passenger endorsement, airbrakes, and school bus endorsement. The temporary employee rate is $16.66 per hour, with a training maximum of 200 hours. Upon completion of training, the trainee may be offered a continuing position as a regular or substitute bus driver.
The substitute bus driver will fill in for absent employees as needed. The duties will be to safely transport students to and from school and school-sponsored activities. Most work hours are approximately 5:45 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. The hours vary greatly according to the assignment. Drivers may be asked to drive at any time of the day. Must be cognizant of and obey all state RCW's and WAC's as they apply to school bus driving. Must follow assigned route schedules, keep route up to date with dispatcher's help and maintain student discipline procedures and training. Substitutes assist in maintaining equipment by keeping bus interior clean and reporting vehicle service in accordance with established procedure; be willing to be called upon to serve in the event of a disaster and perform other duties as may be assigned; drive a variety of school buses and drive regardless of the weather. The work requires exposure to traffic and some bending, stooping, lifting and stretching. The employee remains seated while driving and work requires visual acuity and concentration to ensure the safe operation of school buses. Substitute bus drivers may be placed into permanent positions as they become available.
Qualifications:
* Must be 21 years of age; have less than 3 moving violations within the last 5 years; be in good health and willing to submit to a drug test.
* Have or be willing to acquire valid Washington State CDL license.
* Meet all state and district health and agility requirements; and meet all DOT, state, and district requirements for physical condition, criminal history records and drug and alcohol testing.
* Must keep state and district certifications current.
* Must have a high school diploma or GED and successfully complete the district bus driver training.
* Experience driving large vehicle is helpful.
* Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that would provide the applicant with the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work would be an asset.
* Must have knowledge of traffic laws and safe school bus operating standards and procedures and the ability to operate a school bus safely.

Under the direction of the Director of Transportation or his/her designee, the bus driver is responsible for the safe, efficient and effective transportation of students to and from school. This poistion is subject to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Mandated Drug and Alcohol Testing Program as provided in District Policy #5202.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
* Operates school buses on assigned routes and trips in support of district approved activities both within and outside the school district boundaries.
* Practices defensive driving at all times, and displays courtesy to other vehicle operators.
* Operates all hand and foot controls installed in a school bus as required by Washington State School Bus Specification. Operates a school bus in accordance with the laws of the State of Washington and policies publicized by the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
* Operates school bus in various types of weather conditions including but not limited to fog, rain, hail, sleet, snow and ice.
* Maintains control of student passengers as related to safety and behavior and in accordance with district procedures. May include reporting unsafe actions and working directly with parents and building administrators to correct unsafe behavior of students.
* Completes legible and accurate forms, records, timesheets, reports and other clerical type activities as may be required by the State or district policies and procedures.
* Successfully completes school bus driver training programs and courses established by the Superintendent of Public Instruction, completes training programs and courses as offered by Clover Park School District's Transportation Department.
* Performs daily pre/post trip operation and safety inspections as required of the school bus and related equipment. This includes refueling, checking and maintaining the cleanliness of the vehicle inside and out, checking for damage to the exterior/interior of the school bus.
* Prepares for and performs basic first aid and emergency evacuations as required. 10. Works cooperatively with other school district personnel.
* Foster and maintain positive, productive and cooperative working relations with District staff and patrons.
* Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
* Must be at least 21 years old
* Requires high school diploma or GED
* Experience in driving passenger vehicles for a minimum of three years or one year experience driving a commercial vehicle requiring a special endorsement.
* Acceptable driving record as defined in WAC 392-144-103 (2)(3). Driving record free of all major violations such as DWI or negligent driving, with a limited number of minor violations.
* Physically able to perform daily, routine school bus vehicle safety inspections; necessary emergency road services; use all hand and/or foot-operated controls and equipment found on state minimum specified school buses and maneuver and control a school bus under all driving conditions.
* Possess sufficient strength and agility to move about in a school bus as required to provide assistance to students as they enter or exit a school bus through passenger service door or while evacuating the bus during an emergency. Have no physical limitations which would prevent satisfactory performance of job duties

* Ability to demonstrate and pass required written and physical proficiency examinations for school bus driver. Able to drive all sizes and types of buses operated by the district.

WORKING CONDITIONS

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Depending upon the individual assignment the Bus Driver may perform all or a combination of the following:
1. Drives a school bus to transport students safely to and from school for their education; transports students safely to and from field trips and other special events.
2. Performs pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections of assigned bus; checks oil, water and fuel and other fluid levels; checks lights, buzzers, tires, belts, brakes, and other safety equipment; takes corrective action as appropriate to ensure safe bus operation; reports needs for bus maintenance or repair as necessary.

5. Observes and obeys state, local and school district laws and regulations, rules, policies and procedures related to safe driving and safe pupil transportation; conducts bus fire drills and emergency evacuation drills for student safety.
6. Issues discipline slips as required by district policy. Advises students with bus discipline problems; meets with principal or parent if warranted.
7. Provides first aid to injured or ill students as necessary.
8. Assists students with a variety of concerns and problems, such as changes in destination, locating siblings and other transportation related matters; checks notes and written permission or secures verbal permission from parent for non-routine student transportation.
9. Maintains and updates route maps. Protects vehicle from damage and vandalism as possible. Utilizes two-way radio to communicate with dispatcher.

10. Maintains log of bus activity, passenger count, mileage, fuel and other data as required.

Job Summary:
South Kitsap School District provides paid training for eligible bus driver candidates hired first as Substitute Bus Driver trainees. Substitute Bus Driver trainees are hired as temporary employees while completing an in-house 4-to-6-week training (training minimum of 30-40 hours) to obtain a CDL Class B, passenger endorsement, airbrakes, and school bus endorsement (valued over $4,000). Training Pay Rate: $24.00/hr IDENTIFYING INFORMATION Title: Bus Driver Trainee Reports to: Director of Transportation SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT: Under the instruction of the Director of Transportation or his/her designee, this trainee will acquire training through a 6-week course (up to 6 weeks or 240 hours - maximum) to become a substitute bus driver. This position is subject to FHWA drug & alcohol testing as provided by District Policy 5259.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: (Mandatory attendance required for all necessary stages.)
Stage 1 - Driver's permit assistance (unpaid)
* Applicant secures driver's commercial learner's permit (CLP) within first week.
* Onsite assistance is available (unpaid).
Stage 2 - Classroom & behind-the-wheel training (Paid training)
* Paid classroom training from 7:00 AM - 1:00 PM.
Stage 3 - Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Testing
* Obtain class B CDL with P & S endorsements.
* Vehicle inspection test
* Skills test
* Road test
Clover Park transports trainee to examination site.
Stage 4 - Upon successful completion of Stages 1-3, qualified trainee could be recommended for substitute bus driver position at $24.01 per hour.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
1. Ability to demonstrate dependability in work attendance and punctuality.
2. Ability to practice defensive driving at all times, and display courtesy to other vehicle operators.
3. Ability to operate all hand and foot controls installed in a school bus as required by Washington State School Bus Specification.
4. Ability to operate a school bus in accordance with the laws of the State of Washington and policies publicized by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
5. Ability to operate a school bus in various types of weather conditions including but not limited to fog, rain, hail, sleet, snow and ice.
6. Ability to complete legible and accurate forms, records, timesheets, reports and other clerical type activities as may be required by the state or district policies and procedures.
7. Ability to foster and maintain positive, productive and cooperative working relationships with District staff and stakeholders.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
* Possess a valid Washington State driver's license and 5 years of driving experience.
* Requires high school diploma or GED.
* Acceptable driving record as defined in WAC 392-144-103 (2)(3). Driving record free of all major violations such as DWI or negligent driving, with a limited number of minor violations.
* Physically able to perform daily, routine school bus vehicle safety inspections; necessary emergency road services; use all hand and/or foot-operated controls and equipment found on state minimum specified school buses and maneuver and control a school bus under all driving conditions.
* Possess sufficient strength and agility to move about in a school bus as required to provide assistance to students as they enter or exit a school bus through passenger service door or while evacuating the bus during an emergency. Have no physical limitations which would prevent satisfactory performance of job duties.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Ability to use fingers, hands and arms, sit for prolonged periods of time. Ability to bend, stretch, twist, walk, reach and perform recurring physical activity requiring ordinary strength. Ability to hear and see, to perform duties of driving bus. Exposures include traffic, inclement weather at times, cold, heat dust, fumes possible infectious diseases. Constant exposure to moderate level of noise that does not require hearing protection and occasional disruptive behavior of students. Required to operate hand and foot controls. Able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds in difficult working positions. Exposure to vibration of moving vehicle while in a sitting position. Constant mental and visual attention required.

Employment with Clover Park School District is conditional pending completion of a Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint background check as required by RCW28A.400.303.
