  • GE Vernova Grid Solutions Mechanical Engineer Intern - Thermal design - Summer 2026

    GE Vernova

Senior mechanical engineer job in Niskayuna, NY

SummaryCome and join our powerful, unified force with the energy to change the world. Our mission is BIG. Our TRANSFORMATION is key - bringing the right businesses together to LEAD the ENERGY TRANSITION. Our TEAM is ready. Addressing the climate crisis is an urgent global priority and we take our responsibility seriously. Building on over 130 years of experience tackling the world's challenges, GE Vernova is uniquely positioned to help lead the energy transition by continuing to electrify the world while simultaneously working to decarbonize it. GE Vernova helps customers power economies and deliver electricity that is vital to health, safety, security, and improved quality of life.Job Description The objective of this project is to develop the thermal management solution of a gas-insulated high voltage high power converter. GE Vernova is looking to evaluate different cooling options for a reliable and cost-effective thermal management solution compatible with the gas-insulation design of the converter. The converter topology, its power electronics and passive components have been already specified. In this project, the intern will evaluate different cooling options for the gas insulated power converter and develop the design of the TMS. The TMS development will include the selection of the coolant, design of the skid (pump, expansion tank, sensors, valves and strainers, etc); TMS control systems, outdoor coolers, interconnecting piping. The intern is expected to develop a fluid dynamics (CFD) model to predict the gas flow and pressure expansion with the converter enclosure, evaluate the failure modes and long-term compatibility of the designed system with pressurized gas including for coolant leaks. It is also required to prepare the bill of material, develop the TMS skid layout, estimate its cost, and prepare a maintenance plan. Primary Skills Developed: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), 3D modeling, thermal stress analysis, power losses calculations, steady-state and transient stress analysis Project Outcomes: The project will allow to optimize the design of future high voltage power converters by enabling gas-insulated solutions with viable cooling systems. Today's power converters are largely air-insulated and rely on bulky and expensive cooling systems using closed loop deionized water or glycol. Although, pressurized gas can help reduce the converter volume and footprint by increasing the voltage breakdown strength which reduces the required internal clearances, it may not help improve the sizing of the TMS due to the limited heat transfer capacity of gas as a fluid. An optimally designed TMS compatible with gas-insulated power electronics will allow higher power dense converters, fully assembled and easily transported from factory to site for a seamless deployment. This will reduce the cost barrier of high voltage direct current transmission (HVDC) which will accelerate its adoption. HVDC transmission is considered to be one of the most viable solutions for the grid expansion, required for the forecasted demand from datacenters and for the electrification and decarbonization of the economy. Qualifications: Currently pursuing a Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering. Minimum GPA 4.0 / 5.0 scale. Desired Qualifications: Experience with CFD, power equipment cooling, thermal analysis of power converters, gas-insulated equipment, Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) Proficient with 3D modeling, heat transfer calculations, and Finite Elements Analysis Areas of research in Energy and Power, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Finite Elements, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Heat and Mass Transfer or closely related areas Completed PhD qualifying exam Benefits Available to you: Addressing the climate crisis is an urgent global priority, and at GE Vernova, we take our responsibility seriously. That is the singular mission of GE Vernova: to continue electrifying the world while simultaneously working to help decarbonize it. In order to meet this mission, we provide varied, competitive benefits to help support our workforce: Our Culture | GE Vernova (gecareers.com) The pay for this position ranges from $1,000 weekly - $2,000 weekly based on years of undergraduate/graduate field of study completed This position is also eligible for: Relocation Assistance: Co-op/Interns will be reimbursed for reasonable, proper, and documented expenditures incurred while initially reporting to work and returning to school/home upon completion of the assignment.
