Sterling College company history timeline

1887

Sterling College was founded in 1887 as Cooper Memorial College by the Synod of Kansas of the United Presbyterian Church of North America.

1920

These original curriculum choices remain important to Sterling College (renamed in 1920) even today.

1958

When the Presbyterian Church (USA) came into existence in 1958, the newly formed Presbyterian Synod of Kansas considered combining Sterling and the College of Emporia.

Founded in 1958 as a boarding school, Sterling College evolved into a one- and then two-year experiential college program in rural resource management, looking at the complex relationships between agriculture, conservation, and education.

1959

Here is the first class to graduate the Sterling School in 1959.

So, we, the Class of 1959, dedicate this yearbook to the future of Sterling School, its growth and prosperity.”

1982

Sterling almost declared bankruptcy in 1982, but was saved by a campaign that raised $3.8 Million.

1982 The Grassroots program continues with students choosing to focus on forestry and wildlife (Woodchucks) or livestock agriculture (Aggies) although all students continue with a significant core program which includes year-round Bounder and Expedition.

1983

Sterling is approved for degree-granting authority by the State of Vermont in spring 1983 so that the first class receives their two year AA degrees.

1984

The "Warriors" nickname is mostly often depicted as armed Scottish Highlanders. (Sterling College officially adopted the Scottish heritage as a tribute to its Presbyterian roots in 1984.

1989

The Brown Library (completed in 1989) is complete and named for trustee Marvin Brown.

1998

1998: Sterling’s Mission Statement appears in print for the first time.

2000

2000: Sterling has its first BA commencement ceremony.

2001

2001: The first Mountain Cultures Semester, nicknamed “Semester with the Sherpas,” travels to Nepal.

2007

Sterling College launched e.Sterling, its online programs in 2007 in hopes of bringing its message to a larger audience.

2010

Charles Harding, winner of the 2010 International Award for Excellence from the International Journal of Technology, Knowledge and Society.

2013

2013: Sterling College announces that it is the first college in Vermont, and the third college in the United States, to divest its endowment from fossil fuel extractors.

2017

2017: Sterling celebrates its 60th year with an alumnx reunion weekend kick-off and announcement of a formal partnership with The Berry Center in Kentucky to create the Wendell Berry Farming Program of Sterling College.

2018

In May of 2018, Sterling College challenged its alumni and friends to honor Sterling’s 60th year with a gift of $60, and set a goal to raise $120,000 by June…

2019

2019: The two-year, no-tuition, Kentucky-based Wendell Berry Farming Program of Sterling College is established thanks to a $3.5 million grant and matching challenge from the NoVo Foundation.

2020

Sterling College is far ahead of Real Food Challenge's goal that colleges serve 20 percent "real food" by 2020.

2021

In June, 2021, the College entered into Memorandums of Agreement with five partner communities for its EcoGather initiative and the microsite was launched.
