Town of Belmont company history timeline

1805

In 1805, Frederick Tudor began cutting ice on Fresh Pond.

1843

In 1843, a railroad was built which ran through the town of Belmont.

1850

A group of about 1,000 people joined together in the early 1850's and announced their desire to form a separate town.

1859

The town of Belmont was founded by the former citizens of Massachusetts Bay Colony on March 18, 1859.

1869

The name of the town was changed to "Belmont” in 1869 and the Belmont Historical Society was formed 100 years later on the anniversary.

1882

The town officially adopted this seal in 1882.

1903

Atlas of the Boundaries of the Cities of Cambridge, Somerville, Waltham and Towns of Belmont, Burlington, Lexington, Watertown, Middlesex County. [Boston?]: Commonwealth of Massachusetts Harbor and Land Commission, 1903.

1921

Dr Christian Dupont traced the rise of John J. Burns from his humble beginning as the son of Irish immigrants to his graduation from Boston College, class of 1921, and study of Law at Harvard, where he became a Professor of Law at the age of 29.

1933

In 1933, the Cushing Square area developed as the most important commercial and business center of the area.

1953

2001

The Great Swamp of Arlington, Belmont, and Cambridge: an historic perspective of its development, 1630-2001.

2015

The Belmont Historical Society events during 2015 included great programs such as "The Shaker Legacy" and "Discovering New England Stone Walls".

2016

In October 2016 the Society’s Board approved additional funding to cover the repair of the deteriorated wooden porch surrounding the station and painting the posts and exterior trim of the building.
