University of Great Falls company history timeline
The University of Great Falls was founded in 1932 as Great Falls Junior College for Women by Edwin Vincent O'Hara, the Catholic Bishop of Great Falls, in collaboration with the Sisters of Charity of Providence and the Ursuline Sisters.
In 1933, Sister Lucia Sullivan of the Sisters of Providence established a normal school for the training of teachers.
By 1934, the College of Great Falls would transfer the bulk of its classes, as well as the Registrar and Records offices to Our Lady of Providence Hall.
In 1942, the institution was a single entity under the direction of the Sisters of Providence, and was renamed the Great Falls College of Education.
In this same year, the Sisters of Providence elected to end the usage of the title of “Normal School,” and simply refer to the entire liberal arts institution as the College of Great Falls. As a result, the Diocese of Great Falls would hand over full sponsorship of the college to the Sisters of Providence in 1943.
In 1944, the Sisters of Providence purchased land south of the City of Great Falls on 20th Street.
East Base was continuously expanded throughout the war and after it, with the Strategic Air Command taking over the airbase in the 1950’s.
And, beginning in the late 1950’s and lasting through today, Malmstrom also housed a significant number of nuclear missile silos.
Through the 1950’s the Sisters of Providence worked in conjunction with the Very Reverend Father Jacob Donovan, second president of the college, to establish plans for the new campus.
In 1959, the name of East Base was changed to the name it has today – Malmstrom Air Force Base.
Under the leadership of Sister Rita of the Sacred Heart, third president of the college, the College of Great Falls moved from its location on the campus of the Columbus Hospital to its new eleven-building campus in the Fall of 1960.
With the growth of a formal men’s intercollegiate basketball team, the College selected the Argonaut as its mascot in 1967.
Thus, when 1990 rolled around, Great Falls still only had a population of 55,000 people (while Billings had over 80,000 people by this time) – although some growth had occurred outside of Great Falls.
New Program: Web Development Technology Enrollment reached a record 1,000 students fall semester 1998.
Banner 2000 was adopted to handle payroll, student records, financial aid and business office data.
Additionally, during the 2000’s, a fair amount of growth occurred just outside of Great Falls, including even some luxury and trophy homes.
The flag that was raised had been flown over the US Capitol on Veteran’s Day, 2007.
Welding and Carpentry programs began in the new Construction and Industrial Trades building fall semester 2008.
Doctor Joe Schaffer announces that he will depart to take the Presidency of Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, WY in January 2012.
Child Development Center construction completed in December 2012
New Programs: ASN – Registered Nurse program and Dietetic Technician approved – will start fall 2012.
Since Aretz took office on July 1, 2016, he has rapidly initiated changes to the 85-year-old university in hopes of reinventing the school as a pillar of the community.
