The University of Vermont Health Network company history timeline

1879

Founded in Burlington in 1879, Mary Fletcher Hospital was the first hospital in Vermont.

1903

Tracing our roots back to 1903, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital has a long, proud past.

1903 - Development of Plattsburgh City Hospital begins.

1910

1910 - On June 22, Champlain Valley Hospital officially opens on Rugar Street.

1911

1911 - Physicians Hospital opens at the corner of William and Court Streets.

1924

UHC is located in the former Bishop DeGoesbriand hospital, which opened in 1924.

1926

1926 - On January 1, an all new showplace facility, Physicians Hospital, opens on Beekman Street, thanks to wealthy Chazy entrepreneur William H. Miner.

1955

1955 - A three-story addition is added to Champlain Valley Hospital.

1967

1967 - On January 18, the Boards of the two hospitals sign an agreement to merge and create a single, strong Medical Center.

1971

The University Health Center was formed in 1971 when the need for a coordinated program to teach ambulatory care to medical students encouraged the historic joining of 10 specialty practice groups under one roof.

1972

1972 - On May 15, the lights are turned off at Champlain Valley Hospital for the final time and 95 patients transfer to the newly built addition on Beekman Street.

1990

1990 - The FitzPatrick Cancer Center and other new services open.

1995

The modern medical center, formerly known as Fletcher Allen Health Care, was formed in 1995 from the merger of three organizations:

1997

1997 - A new Emergency Department and a Health Plaza, which includes a Diagnostic Center and the Henry K. Freedman Renal Center, open.

1998

1998 - Rehabilitation & Sports Medicine moves off campus to the Bayside Wellness Center in a joint venture with the YMCA.

1999

1999 - A new Ambulatory Surgery Center opened in June at the CVPH Health Plaza and the first baby is born July 6 at the new Alice T. Miner Women & Children's Center.

In 1999, responding to proposals from chief executive William C. Boettcher, the State Department of Banking, Insurance, Securities and Health Care Administration (BISHCA) approved a $118 million plan called the Renaissance Project for new construction at Fletcher Allen.

2001

2001 - A new, 12-bed mental health unit for children and adolescents opens.

In 2001, the commission approved an amended proposal (also known as a Certificate of Need or CON) for $173 million.

2003

2003 - Construction adds a new 14-bed intensive care unit and expanded cafeteria.

2005

2005 - A new satellite office for physical and occupational therapy and Valcour Imaging, a venture between Associates in Radiology of Plattsburgh, P.C. and CVPH open at 16 Degrandpre Way adjacent to the CVPH Health Plaza.

2006

In August 2006 David Cox, former CFO, pleaded guilty to charges and admitted his role in the controversy.

2007

As of 2007, four former executives have been charged with crimes associated with the project.

2008

2008 - New Surgery Addition opens with 9 operating suites, new front entrance, lobby and patient registration.

2010

In 2010, the Faculty Practice became known as the University of Vermont Medical Group, formalized through a joint affiliation with the University of Vermont and Fletcher Allen Health Care.

2012

Fletcher Allen Partners was established in January 2012 to develop a more coordinated system of care throughout the region.

2013

In January 2013, New York partners Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh and Elizabethtown Community Hospital in Elizabethtown joined the affiliation.

2014

On Wednesday, November 13, 2014, Fletcher Allen Health Care's name officially changed to "The University of Vermont Medical Center," as well as Fletcher Allen Partners becoming "The University of Vermont Health Network."

2017

In May 2017 Porter Medical Center joined the affiliation.

2018

On January 1, 2018, the UVM Health Network Home Health & Hospice (formerly the VNA of Chittenden and Grand Isle Counties) joined the network. (The network was originally called Fletcher Allen Partners.)
