Active USA company history timeline

1816

The third ACTIVE was a 38 ton sailing vessel purchased in Baltimore, MD in 1816 and served primarily on the Chesapeake Bay.

1886

• First battleship (pre-dreadnought) authorized in 1886.

1895

• First three battleships commissioned in 1895.

1898

*** All wooden or iron ships until 1898 when the wartime expansion included eleven merchant ships temporarily converted to auxiliary cruisers.

*** About 20 steel ships, converted to gunboats, were bought by the Navy in 1898 because of the war with Spain.

@@ Twenty-three converted yachts, fourteen revenue cutters transferred from the Treasury Department, war prizes, and conversions of private craft temporarily increased the number of non-steel "gunboats" in the Navy during and after 1898.

1900

• First submarine enters service in 1900.

1902

First torpedo boat destroyers enter service in 1902.

1917

• Bolshevik Revolution begins 28 October (Old Style) 1917

** These two categories are merged together with the great wartime expansion of gunboat numbers in 1917.

1920

Associations of young men were formed in the 1920's in Australia, Canada, Great Britain and the United States.

1922

Active 20-30 International had its beginnings in 1922 when young men in two widely separated communities of the United States saw the need for a service club for young men.

1933

• Failure of the International Economic Conference to stabilize world currencies in July 1933 leads to growing instability.

1934

• Vinson-Trammell Act, 27 March 1934, authorizes--though it does not fund--Navy construction to Treaty strength.

1936

• Spanish Civil War begins 18 July 1936.

1937

• Japan begins large-scale military operations in China 7 July 1937.

1945

On April 8, 1945, the World Council of Young Men's Service Clubs (WOCO) was formed at a meeting in Chicago, Illinois in the United States.

1946

The second World Council meeting took place in October 1946 in Sacramento, California in the United States.

1947

This was agreed upon by representatives of Kin, 20-30 International, Active International, Apex and the National Association of Round Tables of Great Britain and Ireland. It was not until the third meeting in 1947 in Montreal, Canada, that all Founder Members were represented.

1949

• Chinese Civil War won by communists 1949

1950

The increase in fleet size after 1950 is due to the mobilization, begun after North Korea invaded South Korea on 25 June 1950.

1955

• Taiwan Straits patrol begins 1955.

1956

In 1956, the Round Tables of Great Britain and Ireland surrendered its place on the World Council to Round Tables International.

1959

In 1959, President Norm Morrison of 20-30 and President Ken Helling of Active, exchanged a letter renewing the long standing proposal that these two identical young men's service clubs should merge.

1960

In October 1960, the first combined magazine, Active 20-30 made its appearance.

1961

The first convention of Active 20-30 International was held in Tucson, Arizona, July 10-14, 1961, where the Constitution and bylaws were officially adopted.

1973

• Last United States forces withdraw from South Vietnam following the ceasefire 1973.

1975

During the 1975 Convention in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the new International Charity Foundation was adopted to replace Rheumatic Fever.

After two years of discussion, the organizational structure of the Board of Directors was changed at Hong Kong in 1975, and at the same time qualification for membership was changed to allow small Associations a speedier entry as full voting members.

1988

1988 was the year that the women in the Orange County (CA) Auxiliary petitioned the National Organization to become the first women's club in the Active 20-30 organization.
