Each State’s Favorite Easter Treat (Spoiler: Some People Still Love Peeps)

Favorite Easter Treats

Favorite Easter Treats Summary

  • 14 out of 50 states prioritize hard-boiled eggs as their top Easter treat.

  • Americans purchase over 700 million Peeps annually.

  • Approximately 180 million eggs are bought each Easter season.

  • In 2022, Americans spent $6.58 billion on Easter food.

For many professionals, Easter may not be a designated holiday, but it remains a special time for indulging in candy and festive treats, often while donning pastel attire.

Since our love for candy rivals our enthusiasm for work, we set out to uncover each state’s favorite Easter treat.

It appears that many states favor treats that are egg-themed or egg-shaped. Keep reading to discover some intriguing insights—along with your state’s delightful Easter choice.

Other Fun Findings

  • Boiled eggs reign as the most popular Easter treat in 14 states—definitely a classic choice.

  • Peeps, the ever-controversial marshmallow treat, are a favorite in several states.

  • Only eight states (yes, just EIGHT!) look forward to Peeps more than other Easter treats.

  • Idaho stands out as the state with the highest preference for Peeps compared to others.

  • Cadbury Creme Eggs are regarded as the best candy egg, with candy eggs in general being a popular choice.

  • No state claimed Reese’s peanut butter eggs as their top pick.

How We Determined This

Using Google Trends, we identified which Easter treats each state searches for most frequently during the Easter season. Easter treats were defined as those with peak search volumes around this holiday. We then determined which treat had the highest disproportionate search interest in each state.

For instance, while New York enjoys a variety of candies, the search interest in “Kinder Easter Eggs” is notably higher than in other states, marking it as particularly popular in New York.

Some debatable decisions were made in categorizing Peeps as a legitimate food item. Based on my personal experience, they seem more akin to edible plastic! Nonetheless, the search volume doesn’t lie, and we had to include them.

We analyzed a two-week period leading up to Easter to see what treats people were most curious about, coinciding with the peak time for egg boiling and Easter candy shopping. Changes in preferences may occur annually, but the odds are that many of us will continue to indulge in both candied and traditional eggs for years to come.

Enjoy What You Love

While we poked fun at certain Easter treats in this article (seriously, Peeps? Have you ever tasted a peanut butter egg? They’re delectable!), the ultimate choice is yours.

If you enjoy Peeps, go ahead and buy as many as you like—they bring you joy, after all! And if you want to stock up for Easter baskets or hunts, remember that eggs should be kept refrigerated to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

When selecting candy for others, consider opting for candy eggs instead of Peeps. Though they have their fans (and some states might prefer them), Peeps are a rather polarizing choice.
