How We Determined the Best Entry-Level Jobs in New Mexico

Our conversations with recent college graduates have provided valuable insights into their priorities when searching for their first job. Generally, their criteria include:

  1. Job Availability
  2. Location
  3. Salary
  4. Growth Potential
  5. Work-Life Balance

Fortunately, comprehensive data is available from various sources to address these factors. The Bureau of Labor Statistics offers insights into salaries by location, while state Departments of Labor compile job growth statistics. ONet Online, another trusted government source, provides information on job requirements.

We merged data from these sources to create a master database encompassing various professions. Our specific criteria included:

  • Location quotient: A measure of job prevalence within the state.
  • Jobs in New Mexico requiring a college degree.
  • Average annual entry-level salary.
  • Projected industry growth over the next 10 years.

By focusing exclusively on professions that require a bachelor’s degree, we narrowed our list to 17 jobs for ranking.

We ranked each job according to the criteria from 1 to 17, with 1 being the best. We then calculated the average ranking across criteria to generate a “Job Score.” Each job was subsequently ranked based on its “Job Score,” with lower scores indicating more favorable positions.
