We’ve engaged with numerous recent college graduates to understand their priorities for their first job. Typically, their preferences include:

  1. ANY JOB!! (Availability of jobs)
  2. Location
  3. Salary
  4. Growth potential
  5. Work-life balance

Fortunately, reliable data is available from various sources that address each of these factors. The Bureau of Labor Statistics provides insights on salary by location, state Departments of Labor compile job growth statistics, and O*NET Online offers comprehensive job requirement data.

We synthesized data from these resources to create a master database encompassing various professions. Our analysis focused on the following criteria:

  • Location quotient: A measure of job prevalence in the state.
  • Jobs in Rhode Island requiring a college degree.
  • Average annual entry-level salary.
  • Projected industry growth over the next decade.

By narrowing our dataset to only those jobs necessitating a bachelor’s degree, we ranked 13 professions.

Each job was evaluated on the aforementioned criteria, scoring from 1 to 13, with 1 being the most favorable.

The final “Job Score” was derived from the average rankings for each profession, and we subsequently ranked these scores from 1 to 13.
